This one is from an acquainteance of mine - from a Foreign Man - I once met in a smoke-filled bar:

Main Disadvantages:

[A] Search and trial costs [it only makes Google happy]

[B] Anonymity: although anonymous nature of the web protects privacy, enables free speech,

generates content etc etc. It also has a collateral damage : as in lack of accountability

[C] Authenticity: lack of authenticity implies high trial costs - worse it may and does often lead to

misinformation etc . No, I am not promoting a big brother or a *central clearing house*. Just that content

and quality is often promoted at the cost of quality

How can we make the web better?

Its a billion dollar question. Me thinks: we can start with:

[1] A better search engine

[2] A mechanism to aggregate related, relevant and refreshed content.

[3] Search Engines may have to give up some revenues ( I know, its wishful thinking) by rethinking the PPC

model. As of date, the engines are geared toward Hop->Skip--> and Jump model.. More clicks imply more

costs to the consumer, yet, its precisely what keeps their stock prices touch the roof.

Thanks
Your Foreign Contact

Cheers

My Response

I just wrote an article titled “The Web 2.0 Association: A Dynamic Engagement Between Stakeholders Sharing The Same Interests And Goals (Canadian Public Procurement Council Profile)” – the link to which is in the Web Resources Section of this response.

Equally telling was the level of reader response (see link below for one reader’s comments), and in particular the emergence of a common theme as illustrated by the following excerpt:

“Associations could better leverage Web 2.0 to deliver a greater level of service to me as a supply chain professional by more actively, rapidly and efficiently aligning with the pace at which new, useful industry information becomes available – then delivering this information in an effective way, so as to keep me abreast of trends, best-practices and exchange ideas with fellow members; thereby making me a more valuable professional.”

With Web 2.0, and certainly with the semantic-centric Web 3.0 and even (although to a much lesser degree) Web 4.0, transparency, or the integrity of information and intent is essential to ensure both the ongoing veracity and viability of Social Networks (or media).

In his book “Amusing Ourselves to Death,” Neil Postman referenced the fear expressed by Aldous Huxley in his book Brave New World that “truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance." Given the unfathomable sea of information afforded us through the Internet including Social Networks, the absence of transparency would render the media irrelevant.

Google unveiled it’s take on web 3.0 .

Introducing the Google Chrome Browser. Now showing on the desktop near you! There were some hints in the past that Google may be developing a browser, but having seen the heart they have for Mozilla Firefox folks, the idea never took off. Nonetheless as we know it now, Google’s foray in to the Browser War had been under wraps for years.

This is the beginning of a point of high impact for online marketers, and affiliates.

As We've have always said follow the money... Not The Outcome.

Follow The Trend... Not The Trendsetters.

Millionaires follow trends. Many of them have taken to us quite nicely as the Leaders in This Social Network Million Dollar or should we dare say Billion Dollar Venture. It is THE Future.

I spent the last couple months really digging deep into the candidate side of Web 3.0 job hunting and I have to admit, I'm just not convinced that it's ready for "prime time". There is some great thinking and some great technology behind the existing players like Jobfox, Climber and Vitruva, but I've asked around, I've played with them and I've read some other blogs --- I just can't seem to find large numbers of individuals who have found success.

Now as much as people bash the "big boards" like Monster and Careerbuilder, I still think they're an effective means of sourcing for internal corporate recruiters and a good way of finding jobs for job seekers. I work "on the inside" and the majority of our hires come from this method. I get an endless supply of emails and mailers about technologies that claim to "revolutionize" recruiting and I aim to check them all out because I have an open mind. My Agency connections tell me all this stuff is junk, but don't kid yourself Agency Recruiters...that's where you're getting your candidates from too. I know this because I ask all my Agency candidates how they were found. I'll address that in my next post on Open Market Recruiting.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not giving up on this technology. In fact, I have high hopes. The ideal situation would be a MERGER between the big boards and a provider of this 3.0 matching technology because the problem is not that the technology doesn't work, there's just not enough people using it. The sign-up takes too long and the number of companies putting their jobs on the site is too low. That's a recipe for candidate and company abandonment.

So for now, I'll leave this topic and move on to an area of Social Media Recruiting that I've been studying quite intensely for the last 3 months....Open Market Recruiting. I'll take a look at BountyJobs.Com, Dayak.Com and if anyone else has any suggestions of other companies to review...please let me know. Thanks!

Over the past couple of years, the term Web 2.0 has become a household buzz word within our associ

Over the past couple of years, the term Web 2.0 has become a household buzz word within our associations and the larger world. As in the early dot.com days, the promise and potential of Web 2.0 has become the well-hyped social media darling of the online world. Yet, there continues to be struggle over how to flip the peverbial switch in leveraging and mainstreaming these social technologies for the rest of the world. At the same time, users of "sit forward" online technology are still somewhat skiddish in terms of pledging online trust and so many still prefer the comfortable confines of anonymity.

On the other side of the aisle, the expectations that the "harvest" of web 2.0 potential will somehow be reaped overnight has led to premature impatience and skepticism.

Based on learning and observation to present day, my belief is Web 2.0 and the social web, in general, is still in its infancy and is far from reaching full maturity in terms of value and engagement... not just for the association world, but also for the for-profit world as well. However, in my mind that is the natural evolution of any technology.

We've been feverishly constructing Web 2.0 and 3.0 worlds, when all along what we've needed to focus on is the Web Me.0 world. The same basic public relations principle of "so what, who cares, what's in it for me" is highly applicable to the evolutionary change process occurring in the true Web Me.0 world.

One thing I've learned about change, in general, is there is often considerable lag time between visualization and realization. Measure it however you want, whether it be radio-to-tv or dial-up-to-dsl... we must accept the fact that even the most ground-breaking innovations take time to find status quo critical mass within the mainstream. Patience and progression are essential virtues of the day.

Why does it take time? Well, since we are heading out of summer, I'll use a vacation analogy. Visualize the last time you sat on a semi-crowded beach in front of the ocean during off-season. The sun is shining, the waves crashing, yet most people remain on the beach. For those who venture into the water, they typically take quite a bit of time to slowly adjust to the temperature while at the same time mentally assessing how far they are willing to venture out into greater depths. However, there is always the courageous few who will see the ocean's allure and sprint full stride toward the water, splashing wildly as the water begins to obstruct motion and diving face forward toward that first set of small crashing waves for the decisive plunge into the cool depths.

Over time, as the months go by and the season change, the heat of summer eventually returns, the water temperatures rise, the beaches become more crowded and eventually most people take to the water... why? because the conditions are ideal, peer pressure is moving the crowd toward the water and, ultimately, the transition is far more comfortable and relaxed.

The translation is we must realize that the summer season for the social web is on the way and we all must begin by testing the waters. Further, we must be careful to pace rather than drown ourselves in the mad rush out into the water.

More importantly, while we might be able to invent all sorts of clever whiz-bang social web applications, widgets and worlds, we must never forget the mainstream Web Me.0 world whose measure will always be real world relational value based upon the age-old principle of "so what, who cares, what's in it for me".

The good news is I believe a killer set of waves are forming off-shore and setting a course toward our association shore. SM

First things first: play the tape. Its ill, I promise.

Okay, mint.

So since finishing work today, and returning home; I have been perpetually blown away by sick online technology... yes I've been online since i got home.. *shame*

Usually, these occasions might occur on a monthly, or bi-monthly basis. Today however, is different.

First I downloaded Google Chrome. Far out. These guys at Google are unbelievable. They've built a new web browser from the ground up. I would try to explain all the ins and outs of it, but if you've got the time this comic that was leaked from Google themselves is incredibly cohesive.

Basically its a clean as, simple and incredibly functional browser. Hell, it even has its own 'task manager' so you can kill troublesome and pesky processes, say a flash plugin that crashes or something. (and im assuming it's google gears that is currently letting me change the CMS windows from wordpress to the size I want.. you good carnts)

So if you have Windows, go and get Chrome now. Just do it. shut up.

Second. One of my mates i was talking to online suggested i take a look at Cooliris (formerly known as PicLens). For CoolIris you need Firefox, so don't go deleting it already.

Using CoolIris, you can visually browse images in a very cool way. As you can see in the picture below-left, you can navigate these images as if they were all stuck to a wall

CoolIris

CoolIris seem to have worked pretty damn hard to obtain some pretty big time partners. Amazon, Google Images, Flickr, DeviantArt, SmugMug, Photobucket and YouTube are all searchable with CoolIris.

It is so damn slick. I entered the URL for my photography site, and instantly all my images were on a 'wall', and I could zoom in for a closer look with incredible ease. Hovering over any image would bring up its metadata in a transparenty cool sortof way, and dragging along the bottom allows you to dip skip past all the images, as quick as you like, or at your leisure. A fast connection would really show this thing off eh.

Amazon particularly takes on a new life. I'm not one to browse on Amazon a lot. Sure I've made the odd purchase, but this just makes it so bloody easy.. Maybe I'm just a more visually stimulated person, but cmon... search for something you'd potentially want to buy on Amazon, and tell me this isn't a mint way to window-shop. Then if you require further convincing, have a search on youtube. Slick.

Lastly. The tape you see at the top of this post (and that you're hopefully still listening to), was very, very easy to set up. I found out about Mixwit on this random blog somehow - cheers random blog pal - and was able to set up the Mixwit tape (that you should be listening to) atop this page. You can provide Mixwit with the URL of an mp3 you have hosted somewhere, or you can use its 2 built in search engines to find the tracks that you want. i was prety stoked to find some Atmosphere, it seriously took about 3-4 minutes from start to finish to make this thing.

What I really wanted to do, and will suss out how to do soon, is to make a tape with a bunch of my old tracks on it, and put that on here... so stay tuned.. with your finger on the pause button.. ready to make that dope tape.

Best of all, is that all of these things that I have been blown away by, on blown away day.. are FREE... Fantastic.

Duno how far behind the 8-ball I am with all this stuff (well chrome was released today.. so hopefully not too far) but it's impressive nonetheless.

Hah so that's a bit of a rant. You may have enjoyed it, you may not have. Thats the nature of these things.

Have a minter.

Leary.

Worum gehts denn wirklich? Xena40 wurde deaktiviert. Und hier beginnen die Gerüchte:

It’s quite clear that I aim to be a regular contributor to the RPG Blog Carnival, which was fi

It's quite clear that I aim to be a regular contributor to the RPG Blog Carnival, which was first hosted by the Core Mechanic and is now being hosted by Donny the DM. I really would have liked to have hosted the first round of the carnival (and thus have thought up the idea)... or the second, or even the third. However, I do not want to host the fourth though and here's why:

While the number of contributors remains small and incestuous (i.e. generating traffic and comments primarily amongst ourselves), managing the submissions and providing an end-of-carnival summary does not take that much time/effort/money. However, as the carnival grows and more articles are submitted and outside traffic grows, so too do the costs of hosting the carnival grow.

Berners-Lee, Hendler and Lasilla (2001) described it as follows:

"Human endeavor is caught in an eternal tension between the effectiveness of small groups acting independently and the need to mesh with the wider community. A small group can innovate rapidly and efficiently, but this produces a subculture whose concepts are not understood by others. Coordinating actions across a large group, however, is painfully slow and takes an enormous amount of communication. The world works across the spectrum between these extremes, with a tendency to start small from the personal idea and move toward a wider understanding over time."

Clay Shirky wrote about this very concept in his new book, Here Comes Everybody. I don't have my copy with me right now, so I'll post the relevant reference in the comments later on.

So how do we grow our carnival without it dieing off because of the ever expanding costs of maintaining it? Ideally, we wouldn't want to pay somebody an actual salary to keep things working for us. So, I propose a technological solution which allows the group to administer itself without the requirements of a strict heirarchy or strong central control power. The benefits of working in a group are numerous, including the generation of a shared sense of ownership amongst all of us (contributors and readers).

I am a big fan of wikis (plus there are numerous free ones available) and would suggest the creation of one. Of course, this isn't the only possible solution, and I'd really like to hear from the other contributors (and any outside traffic that happens to stumble along) about creating something more sustainable and thus beneficial for us all.

[caption id="attachment_1051" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Twine buttons can be personalized by uploading images from your hard drive"][/caption]

del.icio.us used to be my favourite place for stashing away bookmarks. It worked well for a long time, it was great to just click on the del.icio.us tab when I found a useful web page and store it away for later. The problem in the end was that I stored so many links it ceased to be useful. I tried altering my tags to create a more streamlined system but found myself stunned by the tedium of reorganization.

Then I read an article in Wired magazine (May, 2008) by Clive Thompson titled 'Information Overlord' addressing the problem of internet induced information overload. Thompson mentioned a web application called Twine that he had just discovered, and cautiously recommended, so I decided to investigate it for myself. At that time Twine was not publicly available but they invited people to write and ask for an account. I duly typed a polite request and they let me join in. (Nowadays you can simply send in your email address, and they will send an invitation with a little warning that the application is still in beta mode.)

Twine makes some grandiose claims about being Web 3.0 and there are some intense discussions addressing this claim percolating on the web (Twine Disappoints After Semantic Web Hype and Why I Migrated Over to Twine.) I have no clue whether it really is Web 3.0 or not, and I am not sure I even care as all I want is a decent bookmarking system. (I know I am revealing a touch of the I want the elevator to work but I don't want to know about the little cable that holds it up syndrome.) After all, all I want is to be able to find the things I have stored away.

[caption id="attachment_1036" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Public Twines"][/caption]

You can set up as many Twines as you like, tag information and write notes about each bookmark if you feel like it. There is a choice about making your Twine public or keeping it private, and you can join other people's public Twines sharing bookmarks across several twines. I like Twine's user interface and I especially like being able to select images for each Twine header, in addition each bookmarked page is saved with a thumbnail picture. The application does much more than I have described here; one of its coolest features (for me anyway) is that it sends me an email that reminds me about my own recently saved bookmarks. Emails also arrive supplying me with notifications of posts by other people on the public Twines. Seems a useful application to me so far, I encourage others to see for themselves and have a twiddle with Twine!
