Turkcell'in Türkiye'ye getireceği İPhone 3G bazı kesimlerde büyük merak uyandırdı.

Peki ye iPhone 3G'nin içindeki GPS'in Türkiye'de rota çizemediğini, haliyle gideceğiniz yönü, sokakları belirleyemediğini, trafik durumunu gösteremediğini?

I would say 50:50. I'm trying to analyze Apple's strategy and iphone being a household name in India. No criticism, no praise, no publicity, this is just a plain curious analysis.

00:00 on 22th August, iphone let its first baby cry out albeit very lamely. It was, I think one of the quietest launches for Apple any where in the world. They reported in Economic times that at the launch of the iphone at a Vodafone outlet in Connaught place, Delhi's plush business locality, the journalist heavily outnumbered the buyers (source: Knowledge@Wharton) Sigh! Had I been Nokia, I would have made out a sarcastic ' what a pity' expression.

What is the reason for such a poor response to one of the most talked about innovation? Price, I see is one of the reasons for such a meager response. While the best phones are available only at as high as 24k, paying 31k (about US $720) for the base iphone model seems ridiculous. That too when the same model in available at $199 in US. Does it not sound like discrimination? The model should have been cheaper in India. More than 50% correction and I bet if iphone is not a household name.

Apple, who is known for marketing its products very well seems to have lost a plot here. They have always managed to create the fanfare behind every thing they do. In fact, mac has made its way to the status symbols list almost every where. So what happened here? Did they give up even before they started? I think there is a catch here. May be Apple didn't want to launch iphone in countries in India. Unlike US, where they have a large customer base, India is pretty much novice to what Apple product are. So probably Apple didn't expect huge response and hence never wanted to create the same hoopla aka US. They have been quietly sitting and enjoying Airtel and Vodafone struggle to attract customers.

Another catch, while they launched iphone with a single operator elsewhere, they chose to go with India's leading GSM operators Airtel and Vodafone at a time. Now iphone's sale will have no impact on either Airtel or Vodafone simply because it is not going to amplify their sale. They are just happy to earn that extra money on commission of selling iphone through their stores. They might succeed poaching some from the rival CDMA operator and second largest in India, Reliance communications. But how much is that going to be? Not enough.

Absence of 3G is also not helping the sale again. iphone is using the EDGE technology available in India which is not enough to really unravel the true essence of the phone. So till the time there is no 3G, iphone deems like any other phone, albeit very costly.

Absence of basic features as I'm told is also working against the iphone. I have heard transfer of data through blue tooth is not possible, plus the phone is not compatible with any system but a Mac. There are enough headaches of using a touch screen already (ask me, I'm using one) and forwarding SMS is a big pain in the ass.

Besides the rivals are not keeping quite at all. Nokia N96, Philips Xenium, LG1000, Samsung Omnia have all chipped in. And all of these are priced at least 5k lesser than iphone. All I can say to APlle at the moment is "Best of Luck. You need it"

IT Pro magazine has reviewed the options for mobile broadband in the UK. To save you reading the article, Vodafone comes out on top.

Personally, I have also had success with Three mobile broadband, in fact I currently have a small business running their office over a shared Three mobile connection, as they were unable to get ADSL broadband.

Some people are now choosing mobile broadband as their main broadband connection at home, although the connection is still not as smooth as ADSL, and is probably not the best option if you need to share your connection with other people.

At the recent Citigroup Technology Conference, Dell's CEO, Michael Dell indicated that the strategy for selling the company's 'netbooks' would be via the wireless network operators - the former would be subsidized to consumers along with 3G service. Actually, this model is not new - Carphone Warehouse in UK has been giving away free laptops in exchange for a 3G subscription for many months now.

[caption id="attachment_55" align="aligncenter" width="456" caption="CARPHONE WAREHOUSE - FREE LAPTOP OFFERS"][/caption]

Sticking with the UK, Orange has started selling its first bundle of a mobile broadband dongle with an Asus laptop. 3 UK has also started selling packages in partnership with HP, and T-Mobile is offering an Acer laptop with a broadband package costing £30 (US$55.15) a month. Clearly, operators expect to recoup some of the costs behind the laptop subsidies by tying customers into long-term 24-month packages. Mobile operators are also familiar with this model from their handset subsidy experience. None of these laptops come with embedded 3G - though the USB dongles are provided free of charge as well.

The big question is - are operators ready to be PC retailers? In addition to selling mobile phones and accessories, Carphone Warehouse also sells home broadband, mobile broadband, laptops, iPods etc. So, it is not exactly a leap of faith for them to start offering laptop bundles with 3G mobile broadband. But are mobile operators ready to take on this challenge? Selling laptops means having to provide after-sales support that requires new skills for staff unaccustomed to such devices. Admittedly, laptop prices are coming down, but the real hidden cost is customer service and support.

Maybe there is an opportunity for operators in Central and Eastern Europe where broadband as well as retail markets are traditionally less developed. In fact, in Slovakia, Orange began selling laptops some 18 months ago and has already become the country's third-largest channel for laptop sales. But it remains to be seen how operators in developed markets fare given that ultra-low mobile broadband prices are already squeezing their margins - they would rather not incur additional costs for laptop after-sales service and support.

Remember the Vodafone bug (oops!)…I mean, the Vodafone pug. If you don’t, please read my earlier

Remember the Vodafone bug (oops!)…I mean, the Vodafone pug. If you don’t, please read my earlier post “The Commercial, the Pug, and the Inevitable”.

Now, as it happens with all celebrities, fame is followed by more fame; and fortune quickly comes rolling after. I am not sure whether fortune rolled after the Pug, but its fame has definitely been growing. In my canine opinion, the little Pug is going to be the face of all dogs in the years to come.

The genesis of this post lies in an advertisement that I saw in the Saturday newspaper. (Click here to view the advertisement.) I was about to conclude that it was a Vodafone advertisement and ask Cameo to turn the page, but something stopped me. The colors were all wrong…Vodafone doesn’t use yellows!

Then it dawned upon me…I realized that our dear Pug had landed another modeling assignment…and that this one was for a kibble company. This kibble brand is called “Pedigree,” and now they sport a picture of the oh-so-cute-and-cuddly pug with a may-be-cute-to-some cuddler in their newspaper advertisements; with a tag line, "Pedigree Hi Kafi Hai" that translates to – “Just Pedigree is enough!” Is it? I don’t mean in the “nutritional sense”… but in the “humane” sense!

If we go by their tag line, the dog’s menu begins to read: (Kibble + Water) multiplied by 2n, where n is the number of days in a dog’s life and the number 2 takes care of the diurnal administration of the dose (kibble-lovers please excuse)! Not very interesting…is it? How easy is it to convince a human to do the same…I mean, let us replace “kibble” with the tastiest and the most nutritious dish on the planet, and ask a human to eat it twice every day, with nothing but water, each day of his or her life! I would like to see how happy and satisfied that human would be.

Advertising works by playing tricks on a human’s mind, but it fails to fool the dogs. In fact, the tag line “Just Pedigree is enough!” gives humans a valid reason to reduce their dog-care-related workload. It reduces their cognitive dissonance and makes them feel comfortable in the “fact” that all the needs of their dog are being met by kibble! (Of course, the advertisement also mentions “water” and “love”, but you need to read the entire-copy-in-much-smaller print; to get to that.)

I know that most of you get kibble, but you get your snacks too. I also know your human friends love you enough to bring you dog-treats, share their sandwiches and spaghetti with you; but I’ve known dogs who’ve never known the taste of chicken for they ate “vegetarian” kibble all their lives; and the owners killed their dissonance by telling themselves that their dog was a “vegetarian”! I think that the idea of vegetarian kibble for dogs is a marketing exercise aimed at gratifying the human idiosyncrasies!

There are some “pet” dogs whose humans wouldn’t allow them on the sofas or the beds; and their humans wouldn’t touch them at all. Yet these dogs spent their entire lives protecting those very humans who considered them nothing but either a status symbol (oh, yes…in some countries, adopting a dog could be a status symbol) or an Intruder Alarm System robot…and they treat them so! They treat them as robots who just need fuel and maintenance (read kibble and baths)…and then expect them to work flawlessly until the last day of their robotic lives!

We dogs need love and affection, belly-rubs and ear-scratches, kisses and hugs, there’s no doubt about that…and if you doubt that, you are reading the wrong piece!

So to all those who love their dogs, but who mistakenly believe that dogs are happier eating nothing but kibble all their lives…I would like to say –

We too need a change of menu…not only from one brand or flavor of kibble to another, but also a taste of the delicacies that humans enjoy. I love KFC’s chicken…do you hear…I am sure your dog too would love it! Once in a couple of months, get a bucket of KFC chicken for your dog…you couldn’t spend your money better! Your dog reveres you as god; try being the god your dog thinks you are. If you are a vegetarian, you are so by choice…give the same choice to your dog. In 10 out of 10 cases, the dog would prefer being a non-vegetarian because that’s what we were meant to be…if you don’t believe me, check out our teeth!

And about “Just Pedigree is enough”…

Just Pedigree isn’t enough – at least it isn’t for me…and I don’t suppose it is for the little pug who innocently peers at you from the window of this advertisement! But then these are my views – the views of a dog…so who cares…any way!

comScore says that the United States has caught up with Western Europe in the adoption of 3G with 28.4 percent of American mobile subscribers having 3G devices versus 28.3% in the largest countries in Europe. That works out to about 64.2 million devices - up 80% from last year. When it comes to 3G penetration are Italy and Spain lead U.S. The growth in 3G penetration comes at a time when the data revenues are growing at a rapid clip for the mobile carriers.

They say India is a weird country and that most of the marketing theories which work everywhere else

They say India is a weird country and that most of the marketing theories which work everywhere else don't necessarily work here. Well 'they' are right!

On the 22nd of August, India saw Apple entering the mobile phone market with its latest offering; iPhone 3G. So why are talking about it here, you ask. Since two weeks the iPhone which sold millions of pieces throughout the world managed to sell only (wait hold your breath!) 5000, yes 5000 pieces. This figure is the countrywide sales of the iPhone 3G.

So what went wrong? How come a product which generated blockbuster sales around the world muster only 5000 thousand units?

There are many reasons...
1. When most of the countries were selling the iPhone between INR 8000 to 15000, Indian operators came out with the price of INR 31600 (8GB) and INR 33600 (16GB). Automatically alienating most of the populace.
2. India does not have 3G and the target customers for this phone know that. (Airtel and Vodafone think they are clever... they are plain stupid if you ask me.) What were the service providers thinking?
3. Advance booking does not mean sales. The service providers know that. Again what was the purpose of having advance booking, especially when anyone could do it for free.
4. The iPhone (older one) in 16GB iteration sells for about INR 25000 in the grey market. That should have been a good enough barometer for pricing.
5. I asked a couple of people who are using the iPhone, whether they would have bought the new iPhone. They said that there is nothing 'new' as such in the new version. They also said its priced as a luxury device, which it is not!
6. I also asked a lot of people, if they would consider the iPhone or no over their existing phones. Almost all of them said that it is a great phone but not at all worth the price. The camera is just 2 mega pixel, there is no keypad, (A majority of India's population travels by two wheelers and buses, making it very inconvenient to sms or type anything). Also they were aware of the battery woes of the iPhone (this is something I really did not expect), The post-paid plans also were an impediment for most as they preferred the cheaper pricing structure of prepaid (pay as you go) plans.

I was also talking to a friend of mine, she had recently purchase the iPod nano 8GB. I asked what her views on the iPhone were. She said that the iPhone was great but she preferred her phone to be separate from her iPod. The reason, all the functions use one battery, which is a pain when u need the phone to work for the entire day. I have to agree on that, the more the features, the more battery life a phone eats up. She also put a forward a very pertinent question- "What if my phone gets spoilt, won't I lose my iPod too?" Again I have to agree.

Apple has indeed come out with a wonderful device, but in India they just haven't done their homework. Every western company that comes to India and refuses to learn, have to face this kind of a situation. There are many instances of something of this sort happening. When will these companies learn?

Airtel and Vodafone have decided to lower the prices by INR 5000 on the iPhone. Seriously what will you achieve by this? When your target customer knows that it will be cheaper to buy it in US and have it shipped here. Wake up Airtel and Vodafone! India has changed![caption id="attachment_118" align="aligncenter" width="510" caption="iPhone 3G"][/caption]

I think it's actually a bit fair that both parties pay for the call (as long as the phone sales people won't call me.... Now if they would pay me for the call on the other hand it's another matter!), this is also the way it works in the US, and will open up for more possibilities for companies like us to add value add services in between (in a away that is cost neutral for the customer in terms of the call itself).

Now I am not sure if it will hit the pre-paid subscribers as hard as Vodafone predict though.

Gosh! Never ever, go for a Vodafone service folks. Their service is too poor. I had to wait for almost two days to activate a simple caller tune. Don’t you think this is too much? After deducting the activation charge, they almost took 2 days to activate the service, which was not a matter of fun to me. Unable to bear with their delayed service I made a call to the customer service requesting to cancel the request. Then only they activate the caller tune. Whatever and however it was a disgusting thing to me. I don’t think Vodafone people are ever concerned about such minute issues. Doing big promotions in the market does not make any sense to me when their service is this much disgusting and pathetic.

First, it is my good for nothing Nokia handset that I have already sent three times for servicing and second issue is the disgusting service provider. I would better try for a brand new mobile in the market instead of relying upon these old brands. . Friends if you are going for a change of handset or service make sure you don’t try Vodafone service and Nokia handset. Disgusting service avoid it!

Adica alea cu cu receptor si cu fir. Pe urma, ca omul sa nu mai stea in picioare langa masuta aparatului sau ca gospodina sa poata sa palavrageasca in timp ce face ciorba cu copilul in brate, a aparut telefonul fix cordless. Cu mare repeziciune a dat buzna in viata noastra.

Hello Readers!

Yesterday I attended the national conference on Mobile VAS organized by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). It was a wonderful event. Most of the Who’s who community was present there. They are Sanjiv Mital (Vice Chairman, Bharti Telesoft), Prabhakar Seshan (Country Manager, IBM India), S.M.Talwar (Exe. Director, MTNL), N K Goyal (President, CMAI); Vijay Shukla, (Country Head, Valuefirst), Milind Pathak, (CEO & Country Manager, Buongiorno), Suresh Narasimha (CEO, Telibrahma), Prasad Narasimhan (CMO, Virgin Mobile), Gaurav Mishra (COO, Guruji.com), Debasis Chatterji (Director Operations, Netxcell), Probir Roy (Co-founder, Paymate), Suresh Anantpurkar (VP-Products, mCheck), Shekher Shrivastava, (VP - Marketing, ItzCash Card), Ravi Shankar (EVP, Yes Bank), Niranjan Gosavi (CMO, Atom Technologies), Rajat Mukarji (Idea Cellular), AD Mehta (CEO, CellNext), Ajay Vaishnavi (Director Telecom, Times Internet), Rajesh Jain, MD, Netcore Solutions), Jagdish Mitra (CEO, CanvasM Technologies), A.R.Vishwanath(CEO, IMI Mobile), Salil Bhargava (CEO, Jump Games), RajSingh (MD, ActiveMedia), Chetan Jain (CEO, i2i Telesource), Zubin Dubash (GM, Tata Teleservices).

The conference covered all VAS topics, such as SMS and MMS boosting strategies, business models for mobile marketing and advertisement, mobile payment, content products, music, games, mobile TV, entertainment, 3G services and others products available for the telecom market.

Mr.Sanjiv Mital said that Indian companies will not remain Indian but will become global soon after 3G services are rolled out. He also mentioned that when Bharti tries to acquire or partner with telecom or VAS related companies in Europe, they welcome the move and also feel proud to be associated with fast emerging countries like India.

Mr. Talwar of MTNL said that VAS is the only mode left for telecom companies to survive in wake of ever decreasing call rates. If a company is not able to differentiate and provide better and innovative services day in and day out, nobody can stop it’s exit from the market.

Mr. Vijay Shukla from Value First said that in today’s VAS world, there are 8 categories of people involved i.e. Subscriber content companies, Government and Associations like IAMAI, Advertising Agencies, Mobile Marketing Companies, Telecom Operators, Technology enabling companies like IBM, Handset Manufacturers, and Marketers who spend money.

Mr. Suresh from Telibrahma said that brand in India today is about people, community, interactivity and dialogue. But when it comes to Mobile Marketing, first two of the above don’t want to receive advertisements on Mobile as they consider it as a spam. Thus challenges in building the Mobile Marketing are setting right expectations like in terms of ROI and measurablility and setting the right pricing…Talent (both business wise and understanding technology), scaling and integration with the advertising industry.

Mr. Milind Pathak of Buongiorno said that now increasingly digital media like internet and mobile are getting more penetration then modes like radio and press. According to him, to succeed in Mobile Marketing, we need customer engagement i.e. linking of consumption of medium with the brand message. This will happen when there is a blend of virtual with real. Eg. Sites like 2nd. Life are doing so.

M. Prasad of Virgin Mobile said that opportunities and challenges are basically same. He says Mobile Marketing serves effectiveness (by personalization and language freedom), is targetable (segmentation of customers), is highly interactive and; last but not the least is measurable.

Mr. Mishra of Guruji.com said that mobile marketing should quickly move from push to pull strategy else it will die. ROI will be biggest when relevance and pull strategy will be adopted. For mobile search to succeed and be effective, it should be location sensitive, according to customer preference and has relevant content.

Mr. Rajat of Idea Cellular said that fundamental core of mobility is “Ability to receive a call.” On enterprise level, foremost use is for productivity and comfort. Connectivity bearers are four i.e. voice, sms, ussd and gprs. Fundamental requirements of enterprises thus are encryption of messages, compression and scale of an application.

Mr. Chetan from i2i said that for content enablement four factors play key role: branded content (i.e. unique and coming for well established name), presentation (language sensitivity), mobile advertising and analytics (relevance).

Mr. Zubin from Tata Teleservices said that infotainment needs to know customer needs. Today connections are 90% pre-paid and 10% paid. This differentiates the customer into first being budget customer and later being hungry customer. Thus infotainment should be given to pre-paid customers in sachets i.e. according to customer requirement and his budget, not in bulk as company wants, else company will loose the customer. Paid subscribers are hungry for infotainment and always ask for more thus they should be given full version for e.g. A full video or song instead of a clipping. Rural customers also come in pre-paid segment and buy mobile services in order to enhance their livelihood and always see what value addition it will do to their livelihood and lifestyle. Thus, they need to be given highly specific highly targeted VAS which will help them in making their lives better. Eg. Providing them with just in time services like informing them about best market rates in which they will be able to sell their crop or right kind of seed or medicine they should put in different kinds of soil or seasons etc.

Overall it was a great conference and lot business networking for the audience attending the event.
