Sometimes it's hard to get anything done. You think you've turned a corner and, like the Tour de France, the next incline is steeper and the pelleton has disappeared up the fuck&n mountain.

It's like that in my neck of the digital woods too. For every step we take, there's the awkward rhythm of an accompanying backward shuffle. Now it seems we're all too far behind the convergence fusbal to even attempt a behind (AFL speak for non-Australians).

I've just (how remiss of me) come across yet another online journalism site that offers groovy apps and swingeing critiques of journalism education.

What's a professor2du?

It seems we have to keep up with the digital Joneses, or risk becoming dinosaurs before our time.

The debate (which I've referenced in the past) doesn't stop - it's 24/7 here, so if you can't take the heat, jump off the hob. It's sometimes hard to keep up - what with an analogue as well as a digital life - but here at Ethical Martini, we do my best. I link as I can, read what I can't avoid and jump in here to respond as time allows.

With that in mind, what do you make of this:

Jo Geary at the Birmingham Post says “students now shouldn’t be educated for media organisations as [they] exist now” and that they should also be made aware that newspapers are not what they think they are. My experience with students supports this: they tend to come onto the degree with a rather outdated, ‘monomedium’ view of working in journalism.

Speaking for my own little patch, way down in the Pacific ocean, this is not what we're attempting to do. We believe in convergence and are trying to walk the talk. Problem is this takes time, effort and resources.

Should journalism degrees still prepare students for an industry that doesn't want them?

Time for r/evolution of the journalism curriculum?

These are huge and provocative questions. I'm not so sure that our graduates are not wanted. It varies from place to place, but in general the old media is not yet dead. It is slowly adapting and, yes there will be casualties. But at the moment, "entrepreneurial skills" are not the same as good, effective journalism.

Would we be better off if we told our students "Go away, get a degree in earth sciences and start a blog." Not in my view. Journalism is still too important.

Journalism, change and the curriculum

The new journalism curriculum

If we must teach shorthand, what are we not teaching?

The point is, the debate is not settled and blanket statements to the contrary don't alter this fact.

We are not dinosaurs, we are trying to be innovative. OK, so we're still on YouTube, not Seesmic and we don't Twitter as much as some, but there' also an argument that having the latest toys is not as important as having the intellectual grunt.

We went in search of an answer to this question. Our first stop was the semi-integrated newsroom at the New Zealand Herald. OK, it's not the New York Times, but, warts and all, it's a market leader in this, my island home.

A mix of Virtual Earth + Google Earth + Second Life + Streaming Videos + Public Camera Shots... scary :)

http://www.sentinelave.com/AVEVideoEarthHD.html

Google has continuously investing in integrated platforms, communities, data and has recently launched Lively.

Since Google keeps their open APIs, developers can modify and create new tools based on that. And that's probably part of Sentinel AVE development.

They mixed lots of things, and got this scary and amazing video.

Why is it scary? Well, they have all your information, they know your behaviours, they know what you most like and what you don't, and they can see your, wherever you are. Can be early to say that, but I will keep my window closed during the shower.

On a few occasions in the past, I've talked about gaming and how gaming addiction can be very destructive.

This morning, I received an emailer about Cyber Wellness in Computer Gaming. It's a talk and sharing session organised by Samsung in conjunction with the WCG coming up.

In this era of interactive digital media (IDM) and with pervasive gaming taking place, I do believe having such talks and sessions is a step in the right direction. As people are equipped with the tools and technology, they should also be equipped with the neccesary education to guide their behaviours and choices.

I'm placing the info from the emailer here - perhaps, if you have a gaming addiction, or know of someone who has it, you would want to attend the session.

Mayo Clinic Social Media Update

As I Tweeted earlier today, I had an opportunity this morning to provide an overview of Mayo Clinic

As I Tweeted earlier today, I had an opportunity this morning to provide an overview of Mayo Clinic's social media activities to another division within our department. One of the things I enjoy about doing presentations like this is that as I update previous versions I can see where we've made progress in the intervening time.

Coincidentally, a Mayo Clinic colleague -- Nancy Jensen -- who leads our Public Affairs division in Florida and also is extensively involved in cancer communications nationally, asked me to provide an overview of what Mayo is doing in social media for a discussion board on which she is a member. It's a group of cancer communications contacts for academic medical centers. She also thought it would be good for them to get a taste of SMUG and some hands-on social media education, so I decided it's time for another update here.

Since my last Mayo Clinic social media progress report in May (which I would encourage you to check out for background), we have three significant developments:

Our Mayo Clinic YouTube channel has been significantly upgraded. We've been able to get the look and feel customized to closely match mayoclinic.org, our main Web site for patients, and we've added playlists to group some of the similar videos and highlight them. Currently we have featured our Mayo Clinic Medical Edge videos and the video testimonials and personal stories we shot at the Transplant Games with the Flip.

We've started a Mayo Clinic News Blog. We still have some refinement to do, but it serves at least two good purposes. First, it enables us to provide video and audio resources to journalists on a password-protected, pre-embargo basis, which should help us get more news coverage. Second, when the news embargoes lift, we take off the password protection and make those same resources available to interested members of the general public. And the videos we put there can discuss the research stories in much greater detail than would get into any mainstream media news story, which is a great service to potential patients.

Finally, in just the last two weeks (coinciding with the Transplant Games), we established a Mayo Clinic Flickr account. The first application was to make photos available to the participants who visited our booth, but we've also created sets for photos of our campuses, and it seems the next move might be to put photos there that accompany our news releases.

Nancy also mentioned that it would be good for me to discuss some things a smaller communications unit, perhaps with three or fewer members, could do. It's easy for people to look at the resources Mayo Clinic has, and think that these tools are just for the bigger players.

That would be a mistake; the truth is just the opposite. Here's why.

Social media tools are a great democratizing force. They enable anyone to create content and distribute it worldwide (and also get feedback from users.) Kids can do this in their basements or dorm rooms; as communications professionals we certainly are capable of learning social media.

On a related note, the cost of participating in social media is extremely low. Through wordpress.com, you can get a blog with customized look and feel, mapped to a domain or subdomain of your choosing, and with the ability to deliver your podcasts, for $45 to $55 a year. A Flickr account with unlimited bandwidth and storage costs $25 a year. A Facebook page is free, and if you work for a non-profit, so is a YouTube channel. You may need to pay someone to do the blog and YouTube customization if you don't have that in-house capability, but if you have a corporate Web site those design elements would be fairly easy to match. And you can get a Flip video camera, with tripod, for less than $200. A digital still camera also can be had for that price or less, and you already have computers capable of using these tools.

You can learn more about how to use these tools for free. That's what Social Media University, Global is all about. You can enroll here and then go through step-by-step, hands-on courses in general social media, blogging, podcasting, Facebook and other topics. All it takes is your time.

In the end, that's the real potential cost for social media: it takes some people and a commitment to be involved. But I would submit that these tools provide leverage for you to accomplish your other work, and that by using them you will get better results in less time. And they also provide an opportunity for you to leverage the involvement of others in your organization, outside of your public affairs or communications group.

Tell your story! How are you using social media?

In the comments below, please share your stories and examples of how you're using social media in your organization. I'd like to see them, and I know Nancy's fellow cancer communicators would enjoy them as well.

The Twin Cities market realizes that business as usual will not be enough in this ever-emerging New Media world. The now defunct Metropolitan Media Group took a major move at attracting the lifestyle consumer market by launching 15 city and suburban glossy magazines that were quick to digest and provided some personality to the geographic area. (Petters has an opportunity to maintain this momentum, but according to their horrible business practices they exhibited according to today’s Star Tribune, this legacy is in jeopardy.)

KARE 11 is going after the happy hour crowd with their new website Metromix that has a robust photo gallery to their home page to add personality and point of view to their leisure time picks. KARE also attempted a cutting edge idea in TV programming to go after the mid afternoon crowd – a lifestyle show that was streamed live. Somehow having the show’s producer sit to the side of the anchors/hosts and read real time IMs and Emails just didn’t play out as well as it did when it was proposed in the show’s initial treatment. (The show is now called news @ 4 pm and has a more traditional feel.)

KSTP TV/5 Eyewitness News has taken a gamble with their new show as well – Twin Cities Live. It airs live from 3 – 4 pm weekdays. The twist they offer is an in-house audience with local live music on Fridays. An associate of mine, Rachel Schneider, had sat in the audience at the show’s fourth episode, and signed up for a block of tickets for the show three months later and invited me to tag along.

Having worked as a television/video producer and director (albeit 20 years ago using much different technology) and having worked production on live nightly news for an ABC market affiliate, I brought a different point of view than many of the other audience members. Having also attended many live audiences while living in New York (I once had front row seats at Regis and Kathy Lee a few years back), I walked into the whole experience with an open mind and hopeful expectations according to the first review that Rachel supplied from an earlier show.

I will be somewhat kind and say in a nutshell that the show has a few more kinks to work out. There were some highlights and lowlights – but I don’t want this blog to be a critique of the show. My commentary is geared more toward the need for mass media to get with the program and learn how to connect with their target audience in a personal and engaging way.

One of the hosts of the show does her best and uses 100% of her personality and history with the Twin Cities to connect and engage….but I’m sad to say the male host needs work. I’d like his producers to understand something – he’s attempting to appeal to the Oprah/mid afternoon crowd – why on earth will the stay at home mom or female retiree want to watch and connect with someone that is abrasive?

Some of the local media will succeed in adopting the relationship skills needed in the brave new social media world - and some won’t. Having a live audience is a bold move that can bring great energy and personality to a show. My two cents – hire hosts that can convert professional interview skills into the friendly living room chat fest feel (according to the guests booked and set design) that the show seems to aspire to achieve.

I’m baffled. Anyone out there with any thoughts?

Many of these groups were advocating for the inclusion of a variety of medical providers under the act, or coverage for specific medical conditions, tests, drugs or technologies. These groups also began building strong roots to local organizations to push their political agendas through state legislatures in light of the failure of national reform. The result of this amazing health care reform political formation was a proposed standard benefit package that was extremely rich, comprehensive and, of course, economically unsustainable.

Health care reform Act Two, present day: To all of the above, add the Internet or gasoline to a smoldering fire.

New media has become entrenched in the mainstream public relations campaigns of major corporations such as Pepsi and Microsoft but only recently has it begun to enter the government communications arena. The health sector seems to be ahead of the curve, with the CDC and HHS already adopting several Web 2.0 strategies. The question of exactly which populations are being reached with these strategies is still somewhat unclear, though a new study is beginning to shed light on the answer.

According to a new study by Synovate, part of the Aegis Group, YouTube is experiencing difficulty in attracting female Hispanic and African-American adults at the same rates it attracts their male counterparts. This gap differs from the “general market” population, where YouTube is equally popular among men and women.

Facebook and MySpace are also experiencing similar difficulties with Hispanic females. In contrast, African-American men and women are equally likely to visit the social networking website.

The study findings are significant for any health communications expert trying to reach special populations through Web 2.0 strategies. More information on the study can be found in the MediaPost article describing the findings.

All'inizio delle attività pubbliche in Austr...

I was having a conversation with a friend recently about the possibilities that come with new technology. I have past experience in the museum world and thought I might return to it post-graduate school in order to use the internet to build interactive exhibitions. I understand that a museum's chief aim is to get visitors in the door to explore the collections, but, I strongly believe that by creating online cultural attractions, museums (and other cultural institutions) may offer their educational wares, as it were, to the public both in the institution and for those who cannot come through the doors. I think, eventually, this will catch on, but for the time being, the uptake seems to be slower than I would have thought. The conversation progressed to businesses and brands beyond the museum world and their ability to move as quickly as the technology allows. Most have moved quickly into the interactive, using it to gain a new digital audience through viral marketing, re-branding techniques and the creation of communities. Some are hesitant, relying on tried and true ways to maintain. In the past, major brands have failed to see the future and have paid for it. Could Sports Illustrated have been ESPN? Rolling Stone have been MTV? These were highly circulated and well-respected magazine publications that missed the boat on television. All of these now have extensive and impressive websites, but what about those that have yet to make a solid transition to web? We are in the midst of another time of major technological shift and it is time companies examine the possibilities before they may be left behind, comfortable.

I studied computer engineering in university, so naturally there were a lot of programming assignmen

I studied computer engineering in university, so naturally there were a lot of programming assignments and projects. Also naturally, there was sometimes some copying going on la :P But there's this saying... "change the variable names"... to the uninitiated, that basically means when you copy someone else's program, you make sure you modify it a little bit so that it looks different.

That's a lesson the DAP assemblyman from Pulau Tikus seems to have never learnt!

Pulau Tikus state assemblyperson Koay Teng Hai was found to have duplicated the written questions in total from those previously submitted by Gerakan's former Datuk Keramat assemblyperson Ong Thean Lye.

Koay had simply submitted the exact same questions - verbatim! A DAP comrade tried to defend him saying he wanted to raise the issues again, but that's a stretch because the three questions were to do with 3 different things: the monorail project, sports funding, and petrol kiosks. If he had picked one, or even two, of the questions to copy - okay la, maybe you can say he really wanted to ask the same question again, and perhaps he couldn't word it any better. But all three questions from the same source? Seems lazy.

Here's what I think *might* have happened. Perhaps this fellar got so caught up with other tasks (e.g. service center "donkey work") that he failed to keep track of the approaching deadline for submission of written questions. He panicked at the last minute, and decided it's better to put in something rather than nothing.

Anyway, I don't think this is such a huge deal. The group that comes out looking the worst from this... is Malaysiakini. The newspiece makes some interesting "observations":

The Penang government's boast of being the country's first government based on the ‘CAT' principles of competency, accountability and transparency was dented today after a backbencher was discovered to have duplicated a set of written questions which had already been raised in the previous term.

...

The criticisms are a set back in Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's efforts in running a transparent and clean establishment since coming to power last March

Uhh.... what? A slip by a DAP backbencher (and a junior one, at that) can undermine the DAP/PKR state government? Talk about emo/drama queen/high on mushrooms...

By the way, it's interesting to note that Koay Teng Hai won his seat for the DAP with a majority of 1.7k, defeating a Gerakan "heavyweight" who was considered a possible CM candidate. Now the Gerakan "heavyweight" has been relegated to "has been status" because of the whacking that Gerakan took nationwide. That "heavyweight" also enjoyed giant-killer status, because it was he who defeated Lim Kit Siang in the 1999 General Election. Maybe Kit Siang should have a soft-spot for Koay now ;)

The economy of the internet has always been based on advertisements. This isn’t surprising, be

The economy of the internet has always been based on advertisements. This isn't surprising, because advertisements are the money-maker for a lot of different mediums: radio, television, magazines, and many more. Like most people who are pretty competent with a computer, I haven't seen an ad in months. I don't even know if this site contains any advertisements. Most people that I know haven't either because they too use an ad blocking program. Back when I used to watch television on a regular basis, I ended up recording almost all my programs on DVR just so I could skip the commercials. I don't have anything against advertisements, I just don't feel like wasting my time gazing at products I will not buy. Outside of movie trailers (which I now view online), there really has never been an advertisement that has convinced me to buy a product.

Shawn Shahani tagged this item on del.icio.us: Add-Art, "a free FireFox add-on which replaces advertising on websites with curated art images." Most likely this won't have a major impact on any markets simply because the people that would use this would have a higher chance of already using a well-known ad blocker. What is important is that as time goes on, more and more people will become more tech-savvy and will use these mediums to replace advertisements with art or simply dead space. The question becomes how will the companies respond to increase their revenue? The answer, sadly, is most of them will resist changing their methods for as long as possible until a new company comes along with a new business model that they can copy.

Resisting change is a much easier business model than adapting to new environments. You don't have to be Umair Haque to realize that companies continually engage in old and outdated business methods instead of trying to revolutionize their field. I can't say that I blame them. If I was a CEO of a company and was faced with the decision of an old but steady business model versus a higher-potential-but-more-risky model, I think I would make the coward's choice. When you're gambling with millions of dollars and your livelihood, it makes it that much harder to shun traditional sources of income.

I am still trying to come to terms with the idea of this new market economy where open-source beats closed-source, where the gift-economy is king, where the long-tail can be as profitable as the head, and where advertisements are no longer the best generator of revenue. Of course I could be completely wrong with my last point, I haven't even started my upper-division economic courses, what do I know? I am, however, prepared to teach myself through a lot of reading.

"Watching whole he eagerly surveyed the Sahara from the summit of the Great Pyramid, or timed the contortions of a group of howling dervishes, or stared at a beautiful houri in a Cairo window, Theodore Senior could relax, knowing that his son was educating himself."

A public lecture by Professor J. Jack Halberstam

Author of: Female Masculinity In a Queer time and Place, and The Drag King Book with Del LaGrace Volcano

Sponsored by the Narrative, Discourse and Pedagogy research node and the College of Arts, University of Western Sydney, Australia

Abstract I want to lay out a thesis about a new genre of animated feature films that use Computer Generated Image (CGI) technology instead of standard linear animation techniques and that surprisingly foreground the themes of revolution and transformation. I will call this genre “Pixarvolt” in order to link the technology to the thematic focus and I will show that in the new animation films certain topics that would simply never appear in adult films are central to the success and emotional impact of these narratives. Furthermore, and perhaps even more surprisingly, the Pixarvolt films make subtle as well as overt connections between communitarian revolt and queer embodiment and thereby articulate, in ways that theory and popular narrative have not, the sometimes counter-intuitive links between queerness and socialist struggle. And so, while queer politics are often caricatured by Marxists as “body politics” or as simply superficial, these films recognize that alternative forms of embodiment and desire are central to the struggle against corporate domination.

There has been a lot of talk about Google’s latest addition, Lively. And I did actually create

There has been a lot of talk about Google's latest addition, Lively. And I did actually create a room a couple of days ago ..

I created the room from the windows part of my MacBook Pro (this is exactely the argument for keeping the windows part!), but it is rather annoying that I can't access via the Mac part..

So I guess I'll let others analyze this new virtual environment for now. At RezED I just stumbled on an interview with Sandra Andrews (Arizona State University) made in SL by Jeremy Kemp from (San Jose State University):

In this 30-minute interview, Sandra Andrews, Education Technologist working on the Lively platform for nearly a year, outlines general features, strengths and weaknesses of Lively as a teaching and learning tool and just a few hints on what's next.

Some of the major advantages of Lively seem to be:

Easy to access (link to your Google profile and log-in information, small download)

Privacy (as a room owner you control access)

Good educational gadgets (e.g. video)

Text chat

Avatars and 3D setting (limited customizing!

Sandra Andrews also points out that Lively still is an emerging technology, and it it's dangerous to compare it too much to Second Life .

As Dusan Writer note Lively may be more of a social networking 3D space as opposed to a 3D world. And then as Jose C. Gomez states in his review for now Lively may be just another application bugging down the Internet .. Or at least as stated above "a work in progress" ..
