It's hardly unexpected, but Facebook has integrated Microsoft's Live Search into its site.

As part of a deal announced in July, users can now search the Web using Microsoft's search engine without leaving Facebook. Of course, as Mashable points out, there are lots of other ways to search the Internet without leaving Facebook [say, using the Google Toolbar].

Although it's garden variety search today, there are some interesting possibilities--and also some nightmarish scenarios--one can imagine down the road, when one combines search with social networking.

The real question, for now, is how much of a boost Microsoft gets from being inside Facebook. It's clearly a branding-and-awareness plum, but it's not clear how much actual search traffic and revenue will be generated.

Also, since all the searches take place inside Facebook, it's not even clear whether Microsoft will get a direct increase in search share numbers.

Definitivamente no puedo esperar para jugarlo, ya  que superara por mucho al Rock Band, desde su lista de canciones hasta las opciones e instrumentos que trae. Todo es Superior.

PC in the Mac ads is this boring guy in a suit wearing glasses. So, in the "I'm a PC" ad it has people saying things like "I wear glasses".

"Mac" in the Mac ads is cool, casual and fun, and played by Justin Long (who is totally up there).

I guess Microsoft don't like being thought of as being boring. Fair enough. They want to be the cool ones with the cool ads. Sadly, their ad isn't funny. However, I have to admit that it is well made. To bad it's trying to rip off Apple.

The Continuous Data Protection means that changes are backed up almost as they happen, giving you near up to the minute protection in the event of a disaster. It also means that when you restore the data, you've lost only 15 minutes worth of emails, transactions etc..not a whole day as with traditional tape backups.

Disk Based Backups also allow you to restore data in a few minutes, rather than hours with tape. Another benefit is that users can restore their own files (if allowed) without hassling IT :-)

That being said, I'd still backup up to tape as well, giving you the added security of off site backups if you needed them.

Windows continues to dominate the landscape because they dominated in the past.  Average every day people do not want to try new things.  They don't like new churches, new brands of cars, and especially they don’t like a new OS.  They also do not have any need for a new OS. The average computer user probably uses three to four applications a day.  The number one application the average computer user uses is a web browser, and since all versions of windows come with a web browser most windows users are happy.

Windows also has the wonderful distinction of being installed on every computer that can be found in a store. I hate to break it to you but, the store is where most people shop.  I know it seems crazy to me too, the average person likes to walk up to something look at it and use it.  The average person also finds a computer as a large purchase, so they do price comparisons.  The average person has no idea, what the extra $200 - $500 will get them when they buy a Mac.  Most shoppers also don't care what it will get them because they only want to get on the internet.

Finally, people continue to use windows because they don't even know what an operating system is.  A large number of people don't realize that there are alternatives to windows; they think that windows is a computer.  This is a huge problem; I am just as mystified by it as you are.  This  is like the average person thinking that Prius means hybrid car.  Can you imagine if someone said, “Hey, I heard Honda is starting to make a Prius vehicle".  For some reason this is how the computer industry currently is.

Windows will continue to be the operating system of choice for the average American, until the price of Mac OS's goes down, users do more than go online, and until users understand there are more options out there than just windows.

Mas sobre a ligação o que valeu a pena mesmo foi depois de uns 45min de ligação, o "cara" (vou chamar de MS pra esconder o nome dele) me solta a seguinte pérola no diálogo:

MS: Estou fazendo uma busca em fóruns para ver se acho algo, não encontrei nada na base de dados.
Eu: Eu já fiz buscas em fóruns e também no Google mas não achei nada relevante em relação à isso.
MS: Ah sim, estou procurando aqui mas também não achei nada.
Eu: Você poderia me informar só uma coisa? Você utiliza o Google ou o Live Search nas pesquisas?
MS: (riso) Eu utilizo o Google, é o melhor que existe... nele que se encontra de tudo!
Eu: (riso) Ah sim, imaginei... só mesmo pra saber...

É por estas que eu "adoro" a Microsoft... e agora estão querendo pagar pra utilizarem o Live Search... sendo que o Live nem internamente é utilizado por ela... Difícil de engolir!

I just reached 1000 gamerpoints, so I thought now would be a good time to post my experience on Xbox Live so far.  On September 28, I registered for a free 30 day trial of Xbox Live.  Today marks my 10th day on the service.  I don't have a headset, I just have the microphone that came with Rock Band.  After going into a few games with people talking and entering voice chat a few times, I can definitely tell that I'd benefit from a headset. It's so hard to hear the people talking from my television's speakers.

One thing that I was worried about since I'm a girl gamer was sexual advances from the guys.  Thankfully that has not happened so far.  I only received a potentially creepy request for video chat that happened as soon as I entered a game room.  I don't have an Xbox Live Vision Camera, and if I do get one I will definitely not do video chat, as that just opens the door for weirdos to ruin my Xbox Live experience.

One thing that did happen though was I get a lot of friend requests before I even start a game with someone and I am in the messenger several times a day responding to messages through the Live service.  I don't mind this personally, since the messages are not perverse in the slightest.  It is difficult using the on-screen keyboard to type emails with the controller though.  I have used the Xbox.com messenger to reply to a few messages since I get to use my computer's keyboard to do that.  If any girl gamers want to join Xbox Live but don't want to respond to a lot of messages, I would suggest using a gender-neutral gamertag.  My sister's boyfriend has been on Xbox Live longer than I have, and he has only received one message so far.

As for the games, I have had fun playing two of them over Xbox Live so far.  The free horizontal space shooting game Aegis Wing by Microsoft is fun online, but it is really hard to get all 4 players in a game at once.  Rock Band 2 on the other hand is a lot of fun online for me so far.  I have played 2 modes, Tug of War, and substituting as a singer in someone else's band.   Both were a blast to play.  I played Tug of War as a singer and as a guitarist, and both times I matched up with someone at the same skill level as I was.  My sister's boyfriend on the other hand is awesome at the guitar hero games on guitar and great at drums, and the experience has been hit-and-miss for him.  He has had several people quit the game in the middle of playing, which is extremely rude.  I have not had this happen to me yet thankfully, but he is not very into the Live experience as a result of that, and he is probably not going to continue after his free trial runs out.

My experience on the other hand has been pretty good so far, but I've only played a limited number of games.  At this point, I'm not sure at all if I'm going to continue after the trial is over.  Rock Band 2 online is a lot of fun, Aegis Wing can be fun online if I can find people to play, and I enjoy messaging a few people that have become my friends, but I'm not sure if it's worth $40 a year.  I can still talk with my friends as a silver member, and I can still buy Live Arcade games through the marketplace.   If I do decide to continue though, it will be slightly more than $40 since I will definitely invest in a headset and a keypad.  I'll post again about my Xbox Live experience on day 20 or once I get 2500 gamerpoints, whichever comes first. :)

In the latest indication that Windows Vista's not one of Redmond's greatest hits, Windows XP (aka "The operating system that will not die") has won another reprieve. Friday, Microsoft confirmed rumors that OEMs bundling Windows Vista Ultimate or Vista Business can continue to order media for downgrades to Windows XP Professional until July 31, 2009 . Meaning, for those paying attention, that Harry Potter could get a Vista system downgraded to Windows XP for his birthday. Previously, the last day for downgrade media was going to be January 31, 2009. 1-31-2009 remains the deadline for system builders (aka "the corner computer store") to buy Windows XP licenses for their systems.

As an OEM product, Windows XP won't quite make it to Windows 7's anticipated release date of January 2010, but it will get closer than anyone could have guessed when it was released in October 2001.

NO NO NO NO NO! I guess som people just don't get it. Brian didn't. Yeah ok. This was all just a setup joke sort of thing to advertise for PDC. There were a few problems with going at it this way that I quickly noticed. One, why would they go through all the effort to make an advertisement video by making a 3 minute boy band video? Kind of a waste of time. Two, did they actually think anyone would watch this video all the way to the end? I couldn't watch three minutes of boy band if my life depended on it. Maybe if it were a girl band...

Microsoft launched SearchPerks on Wednesday, which allows 250,000 users to sign up to get points every time they use Microsoft Live Search.   According to an insightful CNNMoney.com article by Yi-Wyn Yen, users must download a web application that records the number of searches they do daily on Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft.   They receive a “ticket” for every Microsoft search and can redeem a total of 25 tickets a day.  In terms of the rewards, about 100 tickets win you a free song and about 1,000 win you 500 airline miles.  Given the choice, tests show that users pick the rewards engine three times over the other engines.  Wow, that was a lot of numbers.

To me, the staggering likelihood to choose the rewarded search over the non-rewarded search is a no brainer.  Sure, like 63% of the population online, I deem Google as my engine of choice.   It’s my homepage, actually.  But I couldn’t tell you if there was a big difference between searching for a product on Google versus Yahoo.  And if you gave me three choices for search, two with no added rewards and one with, of course I’d pick the “perked” search.

Which leaves me with a few questions.  First, am I the only one who feels this way?  Who are the people out there who believe that Google or Yahoo or Search Engine X is without a doubt vastly superior to the others, so much so that no competition with rewards could sway them from switching over?

Second, will SearchPerks only prove successful when it is the only rewards program out there?  If Google or Yahoo implemented rewards, would SearchPerk converters swiftly revert back to their old engine?  Or, would the decision rely on the particular prizes offered more than anything else?

Maybe SearchPerks will prove to be a brilliant smash hit pioneering the way for other search engine rewards.  Maybe it will be remembered as a desperate attempt by Microsoft to pry searchers away from the overriding Google pull.   In the months ahead, we will surely find out.  In the meantime, to learn more about the program, type in SearchPerks on the present engine of your choice.
