Today was the drop date for Google’s launch. As TechCrunch reported, “….like Data

Today was the drop date for Google's launch. As TechCrunch reported, "....like Data Availability and Facebook Connect, Google’s Friend Connect will be a way to securely send personal profile data, including friend lists, presence/status information, etc., to third party applications...." Google wants to obviously become the central hub for personal info. Whomever stores the personal info, by defacto, becomes the "social networker". Own the end user data...own the user. Thus, the article suggests Google needs big sites to partner with...so the littles one follow along down the road with Open Social.

A busy week for such annoucements. MySpace launched their "Data Availability" which allows for data portability. Facebook launched "Facebook Connect" which allows users to take their friend connections and data points as captured in one of these social networks.

Here is a thought experiment that is a bit tangential? What if the API model on Facebook was flipped? What if sites, lets say a news site, opened up their API, and allowed users to upload widgets onto their site? For example, what if you started your day every morning with NYT.com. What if NYT.com opened up their APIs and allowed for third party widget upload? Instead of going to Facebook or MySpace for one's "social networking", a user could continue using their favorite site (in this case a news site). Or, what if I like NYT but dont want to crawl the five or ten other news sites...instead I grab their widgets and upload them onto a page of NYT where I can get a side by side snapshot for that vertical's offering? A Yahoo Finance killer?

The wider web, taking a playbook from the open source movement, could develop widgets for news sites, sports sites, weather sites, etc. Instead of all these "silly" Facebook apps, site specific apps might unleash some creative juices and allow apps that appeal to a broader audience (ie the ones that visit NYT.com or CNN.com, etc). Open Social could power this exercise as it would be helpful to have a central repository with all this app creation.

The question that still needs to play out is who really owns the underlying data and what privacy concerns should be brought to the forefront for a healthy, public debate and discussion? For example, Google still captures one's search queries and stores the info for filtering and analysis to make their search results "more accurate". I understand this tradeoff...but lets say I didnt want Google to use my info and/or I wanted to wipe away my info from their servers. Can I? Right now..not that I am aware of.

Same holds true for the social networks. Removing a Facebook account or MySpace account isnt exactly easy nor trivial for a user. I wouldnt be so confident if I chose to remove my account that my information isnt being stored for some future use?

The topic of user data and ownership becomes really fascinating with the advent of mobile and GPS based location data. If every new phone has a GPS system with long/lat info being continuously sent back to a carrier for a given person's whereabouts, it is not hard to concoct the various scenarios where algorithmic or predictive modeling could garner benevolent or malevolent situations for the end user. What if I dont want Sprint, or AT&T to monitor my exact whereabouts and / or sell this information to a third party who wants to mine this...even if in an aggregated format?

Interesting developments as it relates to personal data, storage, privacy and the numerous tradeoffs from our online behaviors.

In der aktuellen Ausgabe des D-Lib Magazin (March/April 2008 ) wird eine Untersuchung der Crawler von Google, Yahoo und MSN Search vorgestellt. Hier die wichtigsten Ergebnisse:

"...width does appear to be crawled more thoroughly than depth, and providing links on one or two "index" pages improves crawler penetration. Google was quick to reach and explore the new sites, whereas MSN and Yahoo were slow to arrive, and the percentage of site coverage varied by site structure and by top-level domain.

Google is clearly king of the crawl: its lowest site coverage was 99%, whereas

MSN's worst coverage was 2.5% and

Yahoo's worst coverage of a site was 3%."

In the words of Victor Meldrew ‘I don’t believe it!’ I thought I would spend a little time on

In the words of Victor Meldrew ‘I don’t believe it!’ I thought I would spend a little time on one of my favourite websites, Guardian Technology, what did my tired eyes fall on 'Is this a Google killer?'

Google is like Marmite- either you love it or you hate it. I love it- so I’m probably not the best person to assess a potential competitor. Powerset differs from Google in that it does not search based on key words and characteristics, instead Powerset tries to understand the whole sentence. It will ‘read’ your search query as a sentence and find the most relevant information. This of course should make it slower as it weeds through the data. The downside is that it only works for searching Wikipedia, so not exactly fair to compare it to Google just yet.

The Guardian readers have given some interesting feedback on their experience of the new search tool. Some like it, some believe it has potential, some detest the interface and others like me are undecided. I do like the nifty preview of search results, click the little arrow and it displays the page.

If we are in the information society, a place in which we are used to registering mass amounts of data, information and creating knowledge then maybe we do not need a search engine that takes a whole sentence. Maybe our minds are faster than any computer at filtering out irrelevant information and scanning to find the relevant bits.

This of course is slightly presumptuous on my part as Guardian reader EvilClanger highlights,

'a great deal depends not on the engine but on the user and what they type in. A clever search will get a better result from a poor search engine than an ill-thought-out search on a good search engine. You can't legislate for the competence of your users. In general, tech tries to be cleverer to cope with thicker users, but this often backfires and becomes simply annoying.’

Ok regarding users as ‘thicker’ isn’t the best term to use, rest assured although I’m in IT I often have ‘user error’ moments. EvilClanger makes some valid points and suggestions to do with search engines so it is worth a read.

Below are the figures from Hitwise for search engines in the UK (courtesy of Intraspin). Google have yummed up 74% of the pie!

A competitor for Google?…I still don’t believe it!

Hot off the presses, via CNET.com, Google has just announced the release of a program called Vidnik designed to help Mac users easily record and upload clips to YouTube. The above clip is a test run of that software.

There have been reports of audio/video sync issues occuring with Vidnik, and as you can see in my clip I experienced these as well.

I'll be expanding on this post later this morning as I'm late for work; so check back in a few hours for a more well-considered and expanded post.

For now my initial impression: handy piece of software, but the sync issues render it unusable for the moment.

Cómo financiar proyectos de I+D+i

Imagine what it might have been like to be Dr. Kleenex. You invent a modern miracle, the cheap paper handkerchief, and suddenly you become the person blamed for America’s disposable culture, praised for a more convenient life, or both.

There never was a Dr. Kleenex, though — the product was created by a team of researchers at Kimberly-Clark laboratories in the 1920s. But there is a real Craig in Craigslist, and lately he is looking at life beyond his little list that happens to be the seventh-most-popular Web site in the United States.

It is also a site that is deeply tied up with the fate of newspapers — indeed, many in the newspaper industry blame the site’s founder, Craig Newmark, for the downturn in their classified-advertising business.

An ardently no-frills, ad-free, user-sensitive site, Craigslist has, by the estimate of its chief executive, Jim Buckmaster, generated more than 600 million free classified listings. (Though nearly all listings remain free, Craigslist has added modest fees for job listings and real estate brokers in certain big cities, and from those fees the company generates $80 million to $100 million in annual revenue. It has a staff of 25, including Mr. Newmark.)

In the United States and beyond, Craigslist is digging even deeper into the classified-ad markets. Once, an announcement that Craigslist was expanding meant adding cities like Miami, Minneapolis and Philadelphia. These days, it means smaller places like Janesville, Wis., (population: about 60,000) and Farmington, N.M., (roughly 38,000) as well as Cebu in the Philippines and, by Mr. Newmark’s request, a site for Ramallah on the West Bank.

In the face of this expansion, Mr. Newmark is becoming more of a public figure, capitalizing on his success to promote causes that include supporting the Barack Obama campaign and financing investigative journalism — not, he insists, to compensate for any damage Craigslist has done to the newspaper business, which he calls “an urban myth.”

Sitting in a coffee shop in San Francisco a month ago, explaining his plans in neat mathematical style, Mr. Newmark presented an unassuming public presence. He was perched on an ordinary seat, a six-year-old Prius parked nearby, a Kangol beret on his balding head.

He used to spend two-thirds of his time working on customer service issues (including notifying an Internet service provider about a scammer on the site), he said, and the remaining third on “founder issues,” a catchall term he uses for his public-spirited work. That division, he said, would now be half and half.

But before he can extricate himself from customer issues, Mr. Newmark will have to resolve some of the growing business and legal complexities that surround Craigslist, a laid-back operation that is bumping into tough-minded competitors.

A Delaware lawsuit accuses him and Mr. Buckmaster of boardroom chicanery, an assertion they emphatically deny. Their accuser is the online giant eBay, which became a minority shareholder in 2004, with a stake of roughly 28 percent.

And while officials at Craigslist, including Mr. Newmark, maintain that for many years he has not had a significant leadership role there, the eBay lawsuit describes Mr. Newmark, in addition to being a large shareholder, as chairman (the board has two members; it had been three).

The suit was set in motion by eBay’s decision to introduce a rival online-classified site, Kijiji, in the United States last year. Kijiji is already the market leader in Canada, Germany, Italy and Taiwan.

EBay’s complaint contends that after the Kijiji move, Mr. Newmark and Mr. Buckmaster plotted in secret to dilute eBay’s influence in the company, including an effort to deprive it of its board seat. The lawsuit asks the court to reverse those provisions.

Craigslist is expected to respond to the complaint this month, but on its blog it offered an assessment: “Sadly, we have an uncomfortably conflicted shareholder in our midst, one that is obsessed with dominating online classifieds for the purpose of maximizing its own profits.”

The phrase “maximizing its own profits” broadly outlines the fight between the two companies.

Despite its success, Craigslist prides itself on its grass-roots instincts and user-based content — including harnessing its users to identify and block bad actors on the site. Even broad strategic decisions, such as which areas to expand into, are described as reflecting user requests made at online forums at the site.

Perhaps someone should have stood up in a company meeting and suggested this was a bad idea. But they didn't. So, let's take a look at what this new Friend Connect is... Google calls it "a service that helps website owners grow traffic by enabling any site on the web to easily provide social features for its visitors." For those not paying attention up until now, that means being able to port in functionality from Facebook or MySpace or other sites - and use them on your website. It means people sharing information you can't see, monitor or control, on the front page or within your site.

Can you say - what the heck are they thinking? Why would a website want to have social networking tools on it when someone can go to Facebook and MySpace and do this, anyway? Do they really think people will sacrifice both company and personal brand to add features someone already has access to and the capabilities of on, say, Facebook? Ok, so you can use the login and password from that site - and it is secure - but still!

Why would a company want to risk the damaging screenshots that could be taken when someone is conducting business you can't even see on your front page? Or within your site? The winner here is Google, who gets the data feed - not the person or the website. This is the kind of thing that scares me about Google - and them getting too big. This is the kind of thing you'd see the uncle you respect doing, and have thoughts about doing yourself. Don't. This is the time that uncle hurt himself doing something truly foolhardy.

As we've said before, you need to protect your personal brand and your online position as if it were your own home. You wouldn't allow people to play on your porch and have the windows nailed shut and painted over. Why would you do virtually the same thing on your website, with your name and personal reputation at stake?

CNN quotes Fortune Magazine which raises a concern that Google, voted one of the top employers in the country, is steadily losing staff. Sean Knapp, together with Belsasar Lepe and Bismarck Lepe left successful careers at Google and a bucketful of unvested options to found Ooyala, which focuses on building video syndication and monetization solutions for the distribution of high quality video content. They have already attracted $10 million in funding. ( Ooyala means cradle in Telugu, a Southern Indian language, in case you were wondering).

They are not the only ones who headed for the exit doors.

Paul Buchheit, an early Google engineer who coined the oft-repeated "Don't be evil!" battle cry, is a founder, with three ex-Google colleagues, of a social-networking company called FriendFeed, which enables you to keep up-to-date on the web pages, photos, videos and music that your friends and family are sharing. and to to discover and discuss information among friends. Yanda Erlich, once a popular Google product manager, started an instant-messaging company called Mogad, which lets you chat with all your Facebook friends from one IM client. Nathan Stoll, who managed Google News, is hard at work on his new company, Mechanical Zoo. (It's in "stealth mode"- so few details are known.) Former business-development guys Salman Ullah and Sean Dempsey have a new venture capital firm, Merus Capital, that aims in part to fund startups founded by ex-Googler employees. The departures have grown so numerous that the exiles have formed an informal alumni club of ex-Googlers turned entrepreneurs. David Friedberg, another former biz-dev executive, started a company called WeatherBill, which sells insurance pegged to climate risks (nicely profiled in TechCrunch). He recently attended the club's first meeting at a conference center in Palo Alto. "I was surprised by the number of things that were being done that could have been done at Google," he says.

There's been an exodus of executive talent too: Its chief information officer, Douglas Merrill, just left. Several top people have gone to Facebook, most notably Sheryl Sandberg, who ran Google's automated ad sales, and Elliot Schrage, who ran PR. George Reyes, Google's CFO, announced his retirement last summer and has yet to be replaced.

To this old fart, it all seems very normal. Many Microsoft instant millionaires did the same thing in Microsoft's heyday, and so did Cisco engineers. However, for what it's worth, Fortune professes to be worried. "Google has to prove that its quirks - its odd hiring practices (e.g., asking 45-year-olds their GPAs), refusal to play the guidance game with Wall Street, the free food, etc. - will stand the test of time. It has to show that its success is because of its Googleyness (more Googlespeak), not despite it. Even its friends harbor doubts. 'I'm not convinced they're in the ranks of GE or P&G or even Microsoft, for that matter,' says Peter Chernin, president of News Corp., whose MySpace unit is a key Google partner. 'Not yet.' "

Even folks much younger than I can remember all the learned analysts who opined that Google was "overpriced" at $100 per share and was a great short. A recent quote had it around $582.

Still, Fortune does allow for the possibility that all is well, covering all bases: "Then there's the possibility that Google truly is inventing an entirely new way of doing business. 'People are labeling them as just about search,' says Bruce Jaffe, a former M&A executive at Microsoft who came to admire Google the hard way- by competing against it. "'but I'm not sure that's accurate. They've introduced a new model for software. Think of it this way. If they are a household brand on products like Google Maps and Gmail, that may be more than just search.' In other words, getting customers to use Google all the time would make it ubiquitous on the web, as Windows is on PCs. 'It may be that they're in a whole other world from everyone else,' says Jaffe. 'They could be such pioneers that no one will know for years.' "

Something for everyone in this article.

The white paper also led us to spend some time with him recording a Westcast podcast on the topic.

It's all connected to Viacom's lawsuit against Google, claiming violation of copyright in clips posted to YouTube.

"This is the mother of all copyright suits and the implications are staggering," Smolla told us on Westcast. "Both sides have some very strong legal arguments, there are billions of dollars at stake and I'd be a fool to guess who's going to win."

A few days ago, I blogged about using Google Alerts to find out if somebody's talking about you online. Google offers a zero cost, essentially passive way to monitor your online reputation, keep an eye on the competition, and create opportunities to touch customers when their names are mentioned.

Sad note: I got a Google Alert this morning that told me a customer's mother had just passed away in another state. I'm on my way to pick up a card to send my condolences. Email just won't work for some messages.

You might reasonably ask, what does this have to do with marketing? Well, if marketing is about relationships, and I believe it is, then driving to the Hallmark Store, writing a sincere note and dropping the card in the mail will help build an important marketing relationship. If not, who cares? It's the right thing to do.

Marketing, Marketing, Marketing!! You have to sell your music. Record Labels are attracted to independent artists who sold a lot music (prior to signing a deal). Selling music gives you bargaining power when negotiating a deal with record labels. We'll get into that later

Internet Marketing is very much a matter of trial and error. However, there are a few musts for independent recording artists. Independent recording artists must have the following types of web pages:

1. Their own website

2. MySpace music page

3. Facebook page

4. Soundclick page

5. YouTube page -- post interviews, performances, videos, and communicate with your fans

Link all of your pages together as well, so people can jump around. Obviously you will have to have pictures made to post on these web pages. You may want to invest in a good video camera, I stress the word good!

Other Internet Social Networks

There are a lot of other on line social networks and web pages you can create. For example, Ludicrous and some other industry vets have created WeMIX.com for independent artists and producers to promote and network. Be on look for more on line communities like MySpace and Facebook.

Blogging --- I recommend Wordpress.com

Pick a topic that has nothing to do with music at all, but something you are interested in and know a lot about. Use your music as background ambiance music, don't forget to post a link so they can find it. Jill Scott's music used to be a Real Estate companies hold music before she became famous.

AVOID MASS EMAILING

Everybody hates SPAM, I know I Do. If you want, have a mailing list people can sign up for.

Catchy Hook

A catchy hook (chorus) is one of the easiest ways to market a song. I know, all of you think you have a catchy hook. However, how many of you would have come up with the Soulja Boy hook? The Soulja Boy Dance? I hate that song and dance but it is sooooo catchy. It stays in my head all day.

This is how Soulja Boy was able to market himself on the Internet and get discovered. People heard the song once, but it stuck in their head all day. I keep using him as an example because he used Internet marketing and that is what you will be doing.

***It's easier to make a catchy hook with a hip hop track as opposed to a ballad. Ballads have a lot more words so you need to be careful***

Web Site Visits Are As Important as Sales

Here is the biggest secret. Website visits are as important as sales. Record labels look at whose getting the most visits on MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, and others in addition to who is selling. SoulJa Boy was averaging over 10,000 plays on MySpace.

If you have a MySpace music page, every time somebody visits you get 1 play on your music player. Don't play yourself (i.e try to visit your page 1,000 times a day). It won't help because they check computer IP address. They're looking for artists who are getting hits from all over the world! Not your own home.

***Another Example of Why Internet Visits Matter: A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila. She made a website and posted videos of her dancing. MTV came to her!!***

Time magazine gives the breakdown on Tequila's visits and Internet numbers in this article. Here's an excerpt below:

Nguyen—or, oh, fine, Tequila—may be the least lonely girl on the Internet. She has more than 1.5 million MySpace friends. Her MySpace profile has been viewed more than 50 million times. Her self-published single, the profane and attitudinous F___ Ya Man, now playing on her MySpace page, has logged 13 million spins. (To listen to it is to hear the sound track of a million parents' dreams dying.) She gets somewhere from 3,000 to 5,000 new friend requests every day. She is something entirely new, a celebrity created not by a studio or a network but fan by fan, click by click, from the ground up on MySpace.

Read the rest of the article at Time.com or click here.

T-Shirts and Bumper Stickers

No don't sell them, give them to your family and friends. Have them wear them as much as possible. T-shirts make people ask questions. Bumper stickers are hard to miss. The more people see your name, the more likely they are to Google it on the computer.

Give Away A Song For Free

Every now and then give a song away for free. This gets people listening to you. Pick a catchy song, they'll play it in the car with their friends. Next thing you know they'll be visiting your web pages looking for more.

New Technology = New Way To Market

Technology is constantly improving and so is marketing. In 1990 nobody marketed on the Internet because most people did not own computers. Now it's the only way, and almost every home has at least one computer. Be on the lookout for the next technological improvement. Technology defines marketing. Example: Cell phone marketing with Ring Tones.

Ring Tones

BillBoard magazine tracks ring tone sales. Click here to see for yourself. Take your most catchy song and turn it into a ring tone. Put it on your phone, your mom, dads, sisters, cousins, boyfriends and anybody you can find. Next time your dad is golfing with his buddies give him a call. His friends may not like it but they will remember it.

Ever have a friend whose cell phone rang all the time and you hated the ring tone? Still remember what it sounds like don't you? My point exactly, you did not forget the ring tone. In fact you may even catch yourself singing it. That's marketing baby!

They may not even like your ring tone. However, if everybody starts using it and talking about it people assume it's hot. I call it the Jessica Simpson effect.

If you're distributing your music through CDbaby, you can sell ring tones. A couple of the companies CDbaby distributes to allows artists to sell ring tones. One of those companies is 3guppies.com

Internet Radio

It's the newest thing so jump on it. Get your music on some Internet stations. Radio is on it's way out. When you get in your car do put in for favorite CD? Do you plug in your ipod or Mp3 player? Hell yes. People spend less and less time in the car. Gas is almost $4.00 gal so nobody can afford to spend a lot of time in the car.

Everybody is on the computer. Jump on Internet radio and become friends with on line DJ's. Let them remix some of your songs and put them on their mix tape. It's great publicity, just make sure you copyright your music first.

Work With An Industry Producer For $100 or Less

Yes You Can! Trackmasterz is a big name. When you Google them you can see they've worked with Beyonce, Nas, Alicia Keys, and others.

To help aspiring artists they came up with Trackmasterz.com. Independent recording artists can lease beats from trackmasterz and are allowed to sell it with their vocals 10,000 times. Trackmasterz still owns the right to the beat. If a major label wants to use the song they have to buy the beat from Trackmasterz.

On your MySpace, CDbaby, Facebook, etc.. you can say you were produced by Trackmasterz. This will help attract more traffic to your web pages and move you up higher on the Internet search engines like Google and Yahoo.

Read The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

Yes, it works. It's a quick read and a great book. In order to succeed in the entertainment industry you have to visualize making it and believe it daily. Doubt cannot stay in your mind. If it enters, kick it out!

In Conclusion

We're in the digital era. Television will be completely digital by February 19, 2009. Radio will soon follow. Does Arista records still make cassette tapes? No they don't. Distribute your music digitally, don't waste money having CD's pressed unless it is for a promotional venue or giveaway. Market your music digitally. Stick to the Internet and keep looking for new technology. As technology changes new markets and marketing approaches are created.

http://cftaustral.cl/cosillas/temapulento3.xml

(iStockphoto)

"(..) WE INVITE YOU TO COME SEE THE 2020 AND HEAR ABOUT THE DECSYSTEM-20 FAMILY AT THE TWO PRODUCT PRESENTATIONS WE WILL BE GIVING IN CALIFORNIA THIS MONTH.(..)"

State Finalists and Regional Winners were posted today. More from Official Google Blog:

Starting today, you can vote for your favorite doodle. Your votes will determine the four national finalists. Just make sure to vote soon: you only have until May 18th. The national winner will be announced and the winning doodle will replace our usual logo on the Google homepage on May 22nd. ...

More from Google:

Doodle 4 Google is a competition where we invite K-12 students to reinvent Google's homepage logo. This year we asked U.S. kids to doodle around the theme "What if...?"

Well, the entries are in, and we couldn't be more impressed. We received thousands of wonderful doodles, and choosing 40 finalists for the public vote had to be one of the most difficult but enjoyable jobs at Google in the past few weeks.

So the kids have done their part, and we've done ours. Now it's your turn to help out by picking your favorite doodles. Your votes will help us select a national winner to replace our usual logo on the Google homepage on May 22, 2008. ...
