Google just upped the ante when it comes to pay per click advertising. I was already convinced that

Google just upped the ante when it comes to pay per click advertising. I was already convinced that Google AdWords was the most powerful advertising tool to come along in a very long time. That's even more true today.

Google recently announced two significant changes to AdWords that will be a huge improvement for all AdWords advertisers.

1. An Improved Keyword Tool

Once upon a time Yahoo!'s Overture Keyword Tool was the tool of choice for internet marketers researching keywords online. For some reason, however, Yahoo!'s done away with it (want to know why Yahoo!'s struggled, it's decisions like these). One of the key features of Overture is was that it would give you traffic estimates for your keywords, something Google's Keyword Tool did not.

No more. Google's improved Keyword Tool now lets you see estimated search volumes for keywords. It also displays a graph of each keyword's search volume trends for the last 12 months and tells you which month over the past year had the highest search volume for each keyword.

It gets even better. Not only can you get search volume estimates for broad matches of your keywords, but for exact and phrase matches too. This shows you how including or excluding the various match types in your campaign will effect the amount of traffic you can expect.

But wait, there's more! Google throws negative keywords into the equation as well. The improved Keyword Tool lets you view a list of potential negative keywords and the search volume you'd expect for each. In this case, though, the estimated search volume you see will indicate how much less traffic you can expect by adding that negative keyword. Strategically adding a lot of negative keywords can go a long way toward boosting your CTR and prevent you from wasting a lot of money on irrelevant impressions/clicks.

2. Advanced Content Network

This feature gives advertisers more control over ads in the content network. The Advanced Content Network allows advertisers to combine keyword and placement targeted campaigns in one campaign. What does that mean?

A placement targeted campaign allows advertisers to target specific websites on which to run their ads. However, up until now Google would take a look at your keywords, come up with a "theme" for the keywords in an AdGroup and run your ads on sites that it thought matched that theme. The problem for advertisers is that one of your keywords could be "industrial work positioners" and your ad would appear on a website detailing sex positions (I've actually seen this happen!). Needless to say, Google's idea of an AdGroup's theme does not always match what the advertisers theme actually is.

The new Advanced Content Network can help advertisers avoid those problems. Now you can bid on specific keywords (not a theme), select what websites you want your ads to run on, and have your ads appear only on the web pages on those sites that contain your keywords.

The really nice thing about this Advance Content Network is you can now adjust your bids based on specific keyword and placement combinations. So if you find your ads perform especially well on a few websites, you can increase your bids just for those sites to hopefully get more impressions, more clicks, and more sales. (By the same token you can lower your bids for sites that don't perform as well.)

I've just started experimenting with this new feature this week and need more time to kick the tires on it. However, from the looks of things, advertising on Google's content network just got a whole lot more enticing.

Mastering Google AdWords in 3 Easy Steps

By Patrick Coffey, ETR’s Internet Marketing Manager

"I know I need to be in Google … but that can be expensive if you don’t know what you’re doing."

I hear comments like this all the time from Internet entrepreneurs and e-business owners just like you.

Getting your website listed on Google using AdWords is a way to drive targeted traffic to your website instantly. With AdWords, you choose keywords for your ad - and when people perform Google searches using those keywords, your ad will show up on the right-hand side of their search results.

But choosing the right keywords can be tricky.

There are thousands of Internet articles, forums, blogs, and e-books devoted to "mastering Google AdWords" - some better than others. But I’m going to show you how to do it in three easy steps.

There are more than 387,000 Google AdWords advertisers, and new people are jumping on the program in droves. I think it’s fair to say that most of them are unsuccessful - meaning they end up spending more on their Google AdWords than they generate in sales.

That’s because most new advertisers shoot for the moon - and try to secure the top keywords at a premium. You see, Google AdWords are offered in an auction format. The most sought after keywords (like "loan," "mortgage," "hosting," "ring tones") are placed up for auction, and the highest bidder receives the TOP spot on the right-hand side of the search results pages.

Click-through costs for top positions in Google can be as high as $100 per click. So if your advertising cap is $300 per month, your account would close after a measly three clicks. You can see why most AdWords advertisers walk away shell-shocked.

But you can get listed on Google AdWords without breaking the bank. Here’s how:

Easy Step #1 for Mastering Google AdWords: The Money Is in the Middle

Instead of trying to secure the top spot and paying a premium for it … shoot for the middle.

Sure, most of the people searching Google (or any engine, for that matter) rarely look deeper than two or three pages. Which means if your AdWords ad is on page 4, 5, 6, or 70 of the search results, you’ll probably receive very little action. (Not many potential customers will click through to your page.)

What’s more, most of the advertisers "at or near the bottom" of the AdWords ladder typically stay there or drop out. And guess what? Advertisers "near the top" of the AdWords ladder usually drop out too - because it’s just too costly.

That’s why you need to aim for the middle of the cost-per-click range.

When you place bids for keywords in the middle range, the chances are very good that your ad will move up the totem pole (without any added expense) when advertisers near the top drop out. And many times your ad will be featured on the FIRST search results page, right next to the Big Spenders.

Easy Step #2 for Mastering Google AdWords: Getting Rich From Research

Most people don’t have the time to research keywords. They develop a list of words off the top of their head, or they receive help from people who have no Internet, search engine marketing, or direct-response expertise.

If you want to separate yourself from the 387,000+ Google AdWords advertisers, you’ll need to do some basic research on the keywords that you want to purchase. But fear not. There’s an easy way to do it - and it can even be a lot of fun.

There are hundreds of keyword research tools and applications on the Internet. Two of the better ones are Wordtracker and Keywords Analyzer.

I like Google’s Zeitgeist. This tool will show you the most popular Google keyword searches in several categories.

Another tool I like is Overture’s Keyword Selection Tool. (Overture has been bought out by Yahoo. However their keyword selection tool is still active.) This is not perfect. It’s only a gauge of popular keyword search terms for the previous month. But when you combine it with Google’s Zeitgeist, it’s pretty powerful.

You’ll want to select keywords that already have huge search traffic - not words that you think will have huge search traffic. That’s where your research comes in. Once you’ve studied which words are drawing the most traffic, you’ll have a better idea of which keywords you need to use.

For example, let’s say you’re selling watches - and, by the way, the word "watch" received more than 529,287 searches in November. How do you tie your keyword ads to current popular search traffic?

Let’s take a look at the top 10 keyword searches in Google. For the week ending December 9, they were:

James Kim

Pearl Harbor

NASA

Randy Newman

Alessandra Ambrosio

Taco Bell

Pirates of the Caribbean

minimum wage

Rich Rodriquez

America’s next top model

You might be able to work with some of these top-ranking keywords for your product. For instance:

Pearl Harbor watches

NASA watches

Pirates of the Caribbean watches

America’s next top model watches

Keep in mind that straight keyword ads work too (watches, designer watches, cheap watches, specific watch brands, etc.).

After you’ve selected your keywords, you’ll need a headline for your ad that stands out from the masses. The objective is to drive traffic to your site and close the sale.

That brings me to writing headlines.

Easy Step #3 for Mastering Google AdWords: Headlines Make ALL the Difference

Google AdWords allows space for three lines of text - a headline, the body, and your URL.

The URL should describe your product: GreatWatches.com, DesignerWatches.com, DesignerWatchesCheap.com … or something like that. People won’t always bother clicking your ad - they’ll type the URL right into their browser.

The body should offer an immediate benefit, like "Look the Part" or "Lowest Watch Prices."

There are thousands of approaches to writing Google AdWords headlines. Enter a few of the top keywords listed above into Google and you’ll see what I mean. Just make sure your headline grabs your prospect’s attention - and doesn’t let go until he clicks on your ad.

Ask yourself which headlines are working for your competitors. Which headlines do you see repeated week after week after week? The reason most AdWords advertisers continue running the same ad is because it works.

If you can make it work for your product or service, come up with an unusual or newsworthy headline that will stand out from all the other possibilities staring at your prospect. (Do a search on Google news for ideas.)

For instance, you could try these Google AdWords headlines to sell your watches:

Avoid Designer Fraud

Watch Huckster Arrested

Designer Watch Ripoffs

Once you’ve mastered Google AdWords, you’ll get plenty of prospects clicking through to your website. Then it’s up to your site to make the sale. Make sure your website copy flows naturally with your Google AdWords ad … and you’ll enjoy huge profits

Adwords PPC Management Tip No. 1

Setting up an account

If you live outside of the US, different minimum bid prices hold true given the different currencies involved.

Let's take the UK for example - in the UK the minimum bid price is £0.04 whereas the minimum bid price in the US is $0.05.

This means the cost of bids in the UK when currency is converted is significantly higher (July 2005), therefore it may be wise for you to setup an Adwords account which uses USD.

I say may because you will incur charges for currency conversions with your bank so you must look at your own particular financial situation to be sure. The new

So, if you have yet to create an Adwords account - or indeed even if you have an account (you would have to shut it down before reopening another) - sign up at http://www.google.com (not your local Google portal - eg: .co.uk) and specify dollars as your account currency. It Ccould make a significant difference to your PPC management costs.

Adwords PPC Management Tip No.2

How to increase your business profitability by hundreds of percent

Ok,

So you get a mere 4 lines of text to play with in Adwords so every single line counts. Even more than that every single letter counts (even the Capitalisation of letters will make a difference to your click through rates believe it or not).

But what's in a name?

Your name in your ad is of course your URL. When crafting an ad, most people spend a lot of time concentrating on the headline (well worth doing as it is the most important part arguably) and on the ad text (also a good thing but not as important as you'd think).

After the headline, the next thing that prospects eyes are drawn to is...

Yes you've guessed it - your name - your URL

But what can I do with my URL I hear you say?

Just because you have 1 domain name doesn't mean you need to use it. There is nothing in Google's T&C's that prohibits you from using a different display URL to that of your destination URL (although you will have to own the display URL and it must resolve to a pertinent page - i.e. If you're advertising pet food, it must be about pet food and not resolve to another address dealing with a different subject entirely.

Hundreds of percent more profitable…

We have conducted tests outlined above with some of our clients. Results have ranged from 46% through to 76% more profitable domain names. These results are applicable to your bottom line profitability - remember 76% more traffic will result in a like for like increase in bottom line profits.

Your results are equally applicable on and offline, whatever grabs attention online will do likewise in offline print media.

We have also seen a 113% improvement on one of our tests (with a small sample) but we stopped the test early because our results were not statistically significant and waiting for a larger sample was a moot point.

Pop Quiz - One of my clients Jonathan Stanley has graciously allowed me to show you the results of our tests with him. Consider the following adverts and their display URL's:

www.TalkingLeadership.com

www.ThisIsLeadership.com

www.LeadSuccessfully.com

www.MyLeadershipCenter.com

www.LeadingEffectively.com

Which of the above display URL's was the winner and which do you think was the loser and which one do you think was the winner?

Well, the results are as follows from worst to last:

MyLeadershipCenter.com 9 clicks

LeadingEffectively.com 17 clicks

LeadSuccessfully.com 18 clicks

ThisIsLeadership.com 21 clicks

TalkingLeadership.com 37 clicks

Who would have thought it? I certainly wouldn't but then that's the point you will never know until you test.

My thanks to Jonathan Stanley once again at http://www.TalkingLeadership.com for allowing me the use of this example.

And what else can you do with your text?
And even if you want to use your existing domain there's plenty you can still do - remember CAPITALISATION? And then there are sub-domains or even appended directory names.

All it takes is a little creativity and you'll find your click through rates reaching new heights with your Adwords PPC management.

Adwords PPC Management Tip No.3

Keyword Resources

It's easy to think you have a great list of 50 or 100 keywords and stop there but you'd be missing out on the thousands of other keywords your competitors may have researched.

Brainstorming Resources
Here are a few keyword brainstorming resources you should try to increase your keyword list:

http://www.kwmap.net

http://www.trackingandtesting.com/dystatic/AdwordsVolume1Wordtracker.php

http://www.lexfn.com

http://www.goodkeywords.com

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

http://www.trackingandtesting.com/dystatic/AdwordsTip1NicheDB.php

http://www.nichebot.com

A little note on thousands of keywords:
In theory you have 5,000,000 keywords available to you in your Adwords account. In practice this if used would 'annoy' Google as their servers would grind to a halt. Having thousands of keywords is not a good idea from a testing/tracking or PPC management perspective unless:

* You have a large number of people to conduct said tracking/testing

* You have the requisite tools to analyse results

* You are extraordinarily disciplined (along with all the people you have under your command) in implementing correct tracking URL's

Google will cap the numbers of keywords in your account around the 50,000 level - they may allow more if your account history is good.

So don't get too hung up on constructing thousands upon thousands of keywords - find the ones that work as quickly as you can and focus on conversion, your time will be well served.

Bonus Tip

Are you looking for somebody to help you with your Adwords PPC management? Well, perhaps before you decide upon who should help you, type in the following phrase into Google:

"bad ppc management"

Hmmm, makes you think doesn't it…

** Note: This article is spam friendly and has received a low (safe) rating from Spam Assassin.

Although it seems as if Google AdWords is becoming more and more expensive by the day, there are many things you can do to help your AdWords bid management skills. Here's a quick list of things to do to increase your AdWords bid management techniques to help you spend less money in advertising.

Use your daily budget. Most people want more traffic so they increase their daily budget. Yes, this will get you more traffic, but only set your daily budget to what you can afford. If you haven't sold anything from your advertising, never increase your daily budget above $10.

Don't bid on keywords you can't afford. Just because your AdWords bid requires you to pay $0.50 or more to activate your keyword doesn't mean you have to. Most products require 100-200 clicks to make a sale. Determine how much you can afford per keyword based on the number of clicks it takes to make a sale and never bid more than that.

Don't pay more for keywords just to get a number 1,2 or 3 ad position. First page positions should always be your goal, but as long as your ad appears on the first page, you shouldn't raise your bids. Even position 8.0 is desirable. If you increase your bids to get a number 1 rank you're just spending more money. Use your text ads to get the clicks, not your ad's position.

Play it smart. Don't ever bid more than you can afford. I personally rarely bid more than $0.20 per click on any keyword. The less your AdWord bid is, the more profit you can make. Spending $0.50 per click means you have to make at least $50-100 per sale to make a profit.

Although most of these AdWords Bid Management tips seem like a no-brainer, you'd be surprised at the number of advertisers that pay ridiculous amounts of money when they don't have to. Always remember it's much easier to make a profit when you spend less in advertising.

The effectiveness of AdWords pay per click or PPC advertising as a means of attracting qualified tr

The effectiveness of AdWords pay per click or PPC advertising as a means of attracting qualified traffic to a Web site is indisputable, as is its ability to provide additional traffic long after the site has achieved a high ranking in the major search engines. While learning how to use AdWords is fairly easy, some difficulties often arise in the management of cost-effective AdWords campaigns. Here are a few tips that can make this task a little bit easier for you.

Keep the geographic scope of your business in mind when specifying your AdWords campaign settings. A business that is based in Fullerton, California for example will not really benefit from the Global default campaign setting. There is no reason to display your ads outside the area of your intended target market. Even if you do market your products to different countries, it would be far more effective to set up AdWords campaigns in each country, so that it is easier to see where your clicks are coming from.

Plan a budget. When you first set up an AdWords campaign, you will have to specify a daily budget. Your monthly budget then is automatically calculated at 30 times this daily budget. While Google can exceed your daily budget by up to 10% if your click billing is less than your actual daily budget, they will not go beyond your monthly budget. It would be wise to keep your daily budget at a reasonable and realistic level. This can help you avoid excess charges that can arise from click frauds.

Focus your AdWords ads on a small number of related keyword phrases. Ad groups should generally be made up of only 5 to 15 keyword phrases. If you find that you have more than this, you should split them up into smaller related phrase groups.

When beginning a new Ad Group, start out with a maximum bid for the position that you want. When your ads mature, you can then bid differently for each individual phrase in order to hold on to the position that you want.

Try out your AdWords campaign with competing ads. This will involve running two or more ads that are written differently for each Ad Group. This will allow you to pinpoint the best possible wording for your ads.

Make use of negative keywords in order to keep ads from showing up when words that are not related to your campaign are searched. This is an effective way to target your AdWords ads specifically to users that are searching for your products or services.

Many Google AdWords advertisers are frustrated. Most are even confused.

Can you relate?

You've done your keyword research. You've compiled a long list of terms and implemented them into your AdWords account.

What happens next?

Half of the terms aren't even running. Why?

The AdWords system has given you a low quality score, which means that you don't have a very relevant keyword list.

What does the system want?

Answer: Improve your quality, or increase your bid.

Of course, you don't want to increase your bid. So, you must improve your quality score.

How? By increasing your keyword relevancy.

Indeed!

Keyword relevancy is the key to success with Google AdWords.

While it's tempting to include all the keywords you got your hands on, you should note that this is the #1 mistake advertisers make in their campaign.

Keyword relevancy qualifies the end user.

When this user searches on a relevant keyword term that activates your ad, you have qualified someone who is interested in your product/service.

For this reason, you need to increase your keyword relevancy as much as possible..

What is considered a relevant keyword?

The term must be exactly what you are advertising.

For example, if you are promoting AdWords tips, a relevant keyword list may be:

google adwords tips

google adwords help

google adwords advice

Although the following group of keywords is somewhat related, notice that they are targeting a totally different audience:

google adwords expert

google adwords consultant

google adwords professional

In the latter batch, AdWords will surely deem your keyword relevancy lower than former.

Even if you were to raise your bid so that you can appear on these terms, chances are that even if users do click on your ad, they will end up leaving your website without making a purchase.

Why?

The product/service you offer was not exactly what they were searching for.

This is precisely why keyword relevancy is so important.

You need to know who you are targeting, and your target audience needs to know how to find you.

Both sides of the fence are met when you find that relevant keyword term.

Follow these easy steps on keyword relevancy and you're on the road to AdWords success!

Google has been ruling the online marketplace; as testified by sheer volumes of search queries processed on the search engine everyday. Almost every web business caters to this website (and its numerous features) to better its prospects of driving traffic and earning profits.

AdWords, Google's Pay per Click advertising programme, has been touted as one of the most effective and successful ones in this field. It has features that ensure ease of operations for advertisers, irrespective of their knowledge of the domain. Conversion tracking is one such feature associated with AdWords.

In lay terms, it is the process of tracking conversions that are generated through your adverts placed on Google's sponsored sections. Conversion, on its part, happens only when a visitor clicks on your ad and eventually fosters a transaction on your website. The web page that describes a call-to-action phrase and entices users to 'convert' is known as the conversion page.

Each advertiser has a different way of denoting conversions for his business. For some it could be a lead or sale; whereas, for others it could be a sign-up or page view. However, every optimiser depends on the conversion tracking service to figure out the effectiveness of keywords or adverts used in his paid search marketing campaign.

The whole process of tracking is conducted with the help of algorithms designed by the search engine itself. Every time a user clicks on your PPC ad, a cookie is placed on his computer. As soon as he reaches your conversion page, the cookie is connected to that page.

By keeping a tab on this cookie, Google manages to track the activities of the user on your site. And, as soon as he completes the required transaction, Google records a conversion. Usually, these cookies expire in 30 days' time. Therefore, as an advertiser, you have to employ sound strategies for optimization in order to retain users and attain a high rate of conversions within that span of time.

You can ask Google to send the conversion tracking reports of your account through email or in a printable form. The only prerequisite here is an ongoing account with AdWords.

Paid advertising? Well of course if you have the budget paid advertising is the easiest way to driv

Paid advertising? Well of course if you have the budget paid advertising is the easiest way to drive traffic to your site. You can join PPC (pay per click) companies and start several campaigns. It's pretty simple, you set up an account just like you would a free e-mail account, pick the keywords you want your site to come up for on the sponsored list of the search results, then you can start to create your ad. When you make your ad you want to make it short, simple and to the point, and last but not least you want to include a call to action i,e "act now", "see for yourself", "don't waste any time".

Check out who else is you using the keywords your going to use before you make your ads, just simply type in your keyword in the search engine and look at the sponsored results, that's your competition. check them out and see what approach they're using to get customers to click their ads, then try to be absolutely different. If you search any keyword right now on any search engine you will see that all the ads are practically saying the same exact thing just different wording. There are only 2 to 3 at most that stand out from every other ad, and those are the ads that get the most clicks because they stand out more. If you can, try to include the keywords in each ad 2 to 3 times, and try to bid around $0.15-$0.20 cents. If you have a very popular keyword such as "make money online" or "web hosting" your going to have to bid a tad higher maybe $0.40-$.80 cents but it really all depends on your keywords popularity and what company your using.

The numbers above reflect that of Google AdWords in SIMILARITY that is if you have good ad optimization and your sites landing page is reasonably relevant, otherwise if your ads were terribly optimized and your landing page is not very relevant those bids could easily be $1.00-$10.00 per click. Your sites landing page (URL the ad takes you to) has a lot to do with it as well, you want your landing page to be rich with those keywords your bidding on.

All of the steps I described to you like short, simple and to the point ads, be different then everyone else so you can stand out, landing page rich with keywords, include keyword 2 to 3 times in your ad, bid a reasonable amount depending on your keywords - All of these will lead to great ad optimization, and you will be able to bid low and dominate the top 3 sponsored listing on any search engine. Do this on every campaign and watch your CTR (click through rate) and sales go through the roof.

Ok, lets take a look at how we can Optimize our Adwords campaign by simply creating a more targeted

Ok, lets take a look at how we can Optimize our Adwords campaign by simply creating a more targeted keyword list. By doing this you can not only decrease the amount that you spend , but also increase your conversion rate. So, Lets get started.

Keyword Optimization Strategies:

One of the biggest mistakes that user make is by creating an irrelevant keyword list. Their keyword list is to broad for the product or service that they are promoting, For example - 'dog' is a very irrelevant term, and can bring you visitors that are looking for anything related with dogs. Such as - Dog walking - Dog tricks - Dog Food. This is where so many people waist money, they are paying for visitors to come to there website, that will never have any interest in buying from them.

Lets say your selling dog collars, if this is the case then by bidding on the phrase dog collars, you will then have increased your Optimization Strategies for your keyword list. which basically makes your ad more relevant to the users search term. Now, to get even more targeted and Optimized you would want to start bidding on phrases such as - Buy dog collars - Cheap dog collars - Dog collars for sale - Dog collars UK. and so on. The more targeted your keyword list, the high your conversions. However, this normally less hit per day, as your only targeting clients, not visitors.

Singular and Plural:

Another great trick is to build into your keyword list, is to add the singular and plural version of your keyword. So many people are missing out on all of this traffic just because they don't know about this simple technique. For example - ebook, ebooks.

Misspelt Keywords:

Did you know that 1 in 5 entrepreneurs are dyslexic? Well, it's true. This doesn't just go for entrepreneurs. There are many visitors that you could be missing out on by not including the misspellings. There are many great tools out there that will generate misspelling for you. However, only use these tools on your most popular keywords. Otherwise you will end up with thousands of keywords clogging up your campaign.

Similar Terms and Synonyms:

Always try and come up with many different variation of the same term. For example - Dog training tips - Dog training tricks - Dog training secrets

Geographical Optimization

This can be a very powerful technique for anyone who is promoting a product or service in there local area. Simply by adding the geographical location to the keyword can help bring in even more targeted visitors to your website. For Example: 'Essex Dog Training Classes', This is a very targeted keyword which will have a much higher conversion rate than just 'dog'.

There you go, just by following these simple yet effective Adwords Keyword Optimization
Strategies, you could be running a profitable campaign in no time.

Good Luck! :-)
