Last week my Hotmail account was hacked and every single one of my email contacts was spammed. The email was sent from my actual Hotmail address (copies were in my Sent Mail folder) so for anyone receiving the post I am afraid it looked very authentic.

I have been with Hotmail right from the very start even before it was bought by Microsoft and until last week I had never been hacked before. Hard to believe I know, but way back then there were not many web-based email sites and I think Hotmail tempted me with access to a huge Mailbox for storing all messages.

So I thought I would post about my experience in an effort to make people aware that web-based email is vulnerable and is now seen as a relatively easy target for various scams and to procure valuable ID details. I know some people who run their business using web-based email, they chose it for its flexibility and low cost but just think what could happen if you were the victim of a Spam Scam. The credibility of the business could be severely dented.

Though I was understandably annoyed and it caused people on my Contacts List some confusion it could have been a whole lot worse. Once I started to look at other Hotmail members "hack horror stories" I felt rather relieved. For a start, the scam was selling iPods at bargain prices in the Far East ... imagine the embarrassment if the links had pointed people over to some porn site or viagra boutique? Or sent a virus to my friends accounts? Or locked my Hotmail Account and wiped out all my Contacts? C-net has some more information and examples on their site.

It is not just limited to Hotmail though, here is someone blogging about their own hack which happened whilst using Googlemail.

To try to avoid your own web-based email getting hacked these are the two most important things you can do:

1) Pick a strong password. If you are with Hotmail you can do this by logging in with your email address and then Options>More Options>view and edit your personal information>password reset information. Here there is a password checker which will give an idea of the strength of your password.

Non-Hotmail users try visiting this blog which is a fascinating read. Did you know 20% of passwords are so poor even I could guess them!!
eg 123, "password", pet's name, favourite football team, your city, date of birth.

We all know that the longer the password the better, but just look at this table below, it puts it all beautifully into place illustrating how long a password might take to crack depending on the number and style of the characters used.  My own password is now 19 characters long, with characters, numbers and letters.

2) Run spyware and virus-checker software regularly. This link lists an updated Top 5 for the current best spyware packages.  This is a great link for free anti-virus software.

A court in Germany today banned Google from using the name "Gmail" for its popular webmail service following a trademark suit filed by the founder of G-Mail.

Daniel Giersch (33), started using the name G-Mail in 2000, four years before Google released "Gmail".

"Google infringed the young businessman's trademark that had been previously been registered," said the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in its judgement.

I thought this is just one of those cases, where someone files a lawsuit, just because he/she knows that he will get huge bucks in return. But this guy is stubborn that he is not ready to sell that domain. Here's a quote:

"I have made it clear since the beginning that I will never sell the name," Giersch said. "It is my sole intention to realise my idea for a hybrid mail system. I am absolutely convinced of its success. Neither "G-mail" nor myself are for sale."

Last week I opened an email from a friend, and he was telling me of how many problems he's having with his Corvette, and somehow the side space featured an ad for Chevrolet.

I have to guess that at least for today, the algorithm doesn't take into account whether or not your word usage is positive or negative, it just scans for names or other searchable by database items that it can link to advertiser dollars. But even knowing how fast computers work, the fact that the pages open with the ads in place so quickly is a bit scary, are these words selected while the email is still being held in the pipeline before you can even check for your email?

All the above has been percolating in my brain for a while, and what has surfaced is this:

Perhaps when I do a Google (what do you think the "G" in gmail stands for?) news or image search, my subject's search words run through a similar protocol filter and are sifted for content and then added to my Google master file (laugh if you care to, I believe that it exists), since all of the google / gmail information is linked by the cookies that are placed on my computer?

And that information goes where?

What if you're a teacher, and you click on a news article in "Google News" about a teacher that was arrested for having kiddy porn on his (or, be fair now, her) computer? And your G-mail account has a few older undeleted messages to you from the PTA and the local school board, ones that might identify you as perhaps being in the world of education?

I am THIS close to switching back to Yahoo because you can't seem to freakin' get your freakin' act together.

You NEVER let me sign into my account.  NEVER.  And even when you do, it only takes me SIXTEEN tries to get in there and wastes AT LEAST forty-five minutes of my life that I DO NOT HAVE TIME TO WASTE.

WHY MUST YOU BE SO DIFFICULT???

IT SHOULDN'T BE THIS HARD FOR ME TO CHECK MY E-MAIL!!!

Please know, if I am pushed over the edge these next couple of months, it was because of the G-MAIL THAT BROKE THE FREAKIN' CAMEL'S BACK.

I've used the web.config file to get authentication parameters and smtp server, but these can be replaced directly with strings if you like. Those strings will be:

SmtpUser: Your gmail user name. SmtpPassword: Your gmail password. SmtpClient: smtp.gmail.com

Also worth noting is that the port used is 587 instead of 465. If 587 doesn't work, try 465.

Δεν υπάρχουν πληροφορίες αν το Google θα συνεχίσει δικαστικά τον αγώνα για το όνομα GMail ασκώντας νέα έφεση ή αν θα επιδιώξει με "άλλες μεθόδους" να επιλύσει το ζήτημα.

Ma: Maar kijk eens wat je er allemaal mee kan. Kijk hier kan ik via g-mail kletsen, en hier kan ik aan groepschat doen, maar ook op mijn pagina kan iemand met mij kletsen.....

13: Gô, cool (eindelijk, ik heb haar!).
Verwachtingsvol: Dus zo komt er iemand op je pagina?! Zullen we ff kijken?

Ma: Nou uuuh, er komen niet zo heel veel mensen langs.

13: (al minder enthousiast) moet je er op w8en dan?

Ma: uuuh

13: is er wel eens iemand langsgeweest dan om te chatten?

Ma: uuhhh, er heeft wel eens iemand een bericht achtergelaten.... (Meeboguest zus en zoveel - ik zou niet weten wie)
......Ik heb gisteren wel gechat. Met een hele groep mensen. Kijk hier bij g-mail staan allemaal contacten (valt in het niet bij haar MSN-vrienden, maar goed)

13: Niemand is online....

Ma: Nee, het is weekend

13: (bekijkt de chat-aankondigingen) Heb jij als enige gechat?!

Ma: Uuuh, nee ik kreeg wel eens antwoord. Gisteren was heel leuk. Kletste ik met de een en zat ik gelijk met wat collega's in de groepchat, dat terwijl er iemand anders in de wacht stond.

13: Haalt haar schouders op (ach zij doet niet anders).
Maar hoe weet je nou wie er online is?

Ma: Nou kijk je kunt je hier bij Meebo opgeven. Dan wordt je gewaarschuwd als er iemand met je op je pagina wil praten, via g-mail, of ook (hoopvol) ....MSN. (Voor mijn doen behendig) zap ik via MeeboMe, blog, g-mail, groepschatvenster en ook nog het dashboard, zoekmachinetermen en pingbacks terug naar Meebo.

13: Oh......JO!........JO!................ Hou op met je Gee- en Meebo-dinges. Wat doe je allemaal. Pfff. Ik hou het wel bij MSN hoor. Doei. (met een zucht verlaat ze de kamer).

Later die dag sprak Laika met haar wederhelft over de Spoetnikcursus of eigenlijk was het andersom. Manlief vroeg zich af of er niet iets teveel tijd in ging zitten. Het viel op dat Laika nog iets meer tijd dan anders achter haar computer zat.

Laika vertelde enthousiast over wat er allemaal niet te leren viel. Man houdt echter niet van dat soort technische snufjes (behalve als hij weer eens vast zit en wederhelft hem met haar door schade en schande verkregen kennis uit de penarie redt).

Man houdt dit soort zaken graag kort. Dus hij rondt snel af. "Nou lijkt me niks hoor. Het zou een straf (!?)voor me zijn zo'n cursus  met al die technische foefjes. Wat moet je er nou allemaal mee?"

No, in ieder geval zal het ons niet zo vergaan als het echtpaar op het plaatje hiernaast.

Laika in discussie met zichzelf.....

Meebo, g-mail, chatten, fancy allemaal en leuk om het te kunnen, maar het is -denk ik vooralsnog- niet echt mijn ding.  Meer iets voor de jeugd, met een groot sociaal netwerk, en die altijd wat te babbelen hebben. Ik ken weinig mensen die chatten. Chatten werkt alleen als je mogelijke gesprekspartners ook vaak online zijn. En als je het leuk vindt om over ditjes en datjes te kletsen. Ik vind het zelf heel moeilijk om snel een antwoord te typen of een nieuw onderwerp te verzinnen. Stiltes in een gesprek ervaar ik minder als storend dan in een chat.

Ik kan me wel voorstellen dat het een aardig communicatiemiddel kan zijn met  collega's en klanten. Voorwaarde is weer dat je altijd bereikbaar bent en dat het werk zich ervoor leent. Ik ontwikkel en geef veel cursussen en doe lange zoekacties. Dat is niet het ad-hoc werk. En ik denk niet dat het voor mij handig zou zijn als ik tijdens een ingewikkelde zoekactie een verzoek/vraag via de chatbox krijg.

Aan de andere kant kan het wel drempelverlagend werken voor de klant. Ik kan me voorstellen dat mensen dan makkelijker een vraag stellen die in hen opkomt.

Kortom, chatten ik vind het wel leuk om te doen, maar ik weet nog niet of het een erg nuttig communicatiemiddel is. Ik ben wel benieuwd naar ervaringen op werkplekken waar men er gebruik van maakt. Als het daar wel werkt......
