We went the Korean national day do at the embassy on Friday night. It was my first time at such an event and something that struck me was the huge difference between what was being worn by males like me; black shoes, nondescript dark jacket, shirt and tie, or a dull suit, and what the numerous military attaches present were wearing; yards of gold cord, racks of multicolured medal badges, rows of shining military speciality pins, loads of trousers with brightly coloured stripes down the sides etc etc.

Could it be that they, having proven their invincible heterosexuality by being in the military, can feel relaxed in gear like this, while the rest of us want to prove how hard we are by rejecting foppish display?

After adding Armani to its list of fur-free designers, PETA is lashing out at the designer.

According to the activist web site, Armani's newest collection is a contradiction of his statements to TIME magazine last year.

PETA representatives say the fur-trimmed jackets, fur-hemmed skirts, floral-printed fur coats, and fur-trimmed snowsuits for babies don't cut it.

Armani has an odd obsession with rabbit fur, and two weeks ago, he refused to meet with PETA Vice President Dan Mathews in Milan to see disturbing undercover video footage of rabbit fur farms. Since Armani has refused to hear animals' side of the story, it is now time to see if he will listen to the public.

Walking through Melbourne's CBD the other day I snapped this phonebooth ad.

Draggin Jeans are a motorcycle fashion company whose signature item is Kevlar-lined jeans (i.e. to provide added protection in the event of a bike spill).

I've seen their ads on TV - loud, low-rent and featuring ridiculous moto stunts, and mostly full of blokes - many times, particularly during motorsports coverage, which is why I found this ad somewhat out of character (for the brand; not, sadly, for the motorsport community at large).

If you can't read it, it says: "Protect your assets. Wear Draggin Jeans."

Geddit? "Assets"! Good one!

Really, Draggin - any women who are likely to buy your products are not going to be swayed by this; if anything, I'd think they'd be turned off. As for the blokes, well, the company has sold plenty of jeans and jackets based solely on their existing advertising (as mentioned before, featuring little more than - ahem - cunning stunts on motorcycles) and reputation for providing road safety in a reasonably fashionable format. Was this really necessary?

"unconventional and impertinent (and) resolutely forward looking, perfect for people who appreciate beauty and non-conformism and are in search of new sensations. POP is the sound of the cork exploding from the bottle, conjuring up the euphoria and spontaneity of festive nights. for the third edition of the collection, Japanese artist Takahiro Okawa goes to the heart of the jungle with his POP-Safari collection...". and with only 20 cases in the country (oh yea-we special ordered them and 4 cases are all ours...) it makes us feel all the more special.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you - that, my friend, is velvet. It certainly surprised Men's Free Style's friends when we hit the town this Saturday, but we are happy to declare that vintage is definitely something the stylish man does not have to leave to his girlfriend.

Because there are two things about vintage which make it a perfect player in our style campaign - number one, the clothes have been around for a while so inevitably know something retaining a good deal of wearability; number two, they are likely to be well-made and use great fabric (otherwise they simply wouldn't have lasted) but will always come at a better price than their modern equivalents.

Of course that doesn't mean you have to wear velvet - but don't let us stop you...

Also, I wore a summery dress after school, which was nice and made me feel bright, even though it is so dark and grey outside.

Much to my, very excited, surprise: Maggie Rizer is on the cover of L'Officiel Singapore's First Anniversary Edition! She's been gone for a while, having her money stolen by her step father and writing books, opening doggy daycares, things like that but now she's back to what she does best!

Maggie is kind of the unexpected super model. She had her day a while ago, then came back for a while and disappeared and now she's popping up on Vogue Best Dressed from time to time, going to all the great events and scoring covers and ad campaigns.

Keep up the good work (even if the pink hair is a little too much), way to represent us Upstate NY'ers.

Okay, so I am a terrible skin reviewer. For one, I care more about how the face and the makeup look than the shape of the tuches. I must confess, though, that the new Aleri Darkes Virgo skin has a great tuches which I noticed while shooting Gidge last night for an upcoming post on some lingerie. For the first time, almost all of the Institute's vast collection of clothing has been converted to an online database.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has worked diligently on formatting and digitizing 29,432 objects from the 31,000 piece collection. This project was initiated in 2000.

The online archive will be continuously updated, and viewers can zoom in on many of the pieces. You can view this through the museum's website metmuseum.org/works_of_art/the_costume_institute.

... BLAIRE WALDORF!

she's so pretty and have a great sense of fashion. i esp like her signature headband style. she make all the gurls out there wanna go and get one for themselves. i love headbands esp during BHD. (that stands for Bad Hair Day by the way!) so when i found a pair (black and gold somemore, two of my other fav colours after pink. hehe.) in primark that cost me only 1pound, i just had to get em. so it's something exactly like the one she has (but the pic i have of her wearing it is in bmp version or somethin and wordpress does not allow that version to be uploaded. so fine, i'll just settle with the next best thing. haih!) but mine is a slightly smaller version. ;)

also,

i just realised in all the chick flick shows that i watched i always prefer the dark-haired best friend of the main gurl character. my two other fav show if you don't already know by now is the OC and one tree hill.

-I bought this coat last week and I was anxiously awaiting a (mysteriously disappearing) cold front to come through so I could wear it upon the coats arrival.... I finally received the coat today and boy was I disappointed.

The three large buttons are purely cosmetic... and uses snaps to close. When worn open, the snaps are very visible down the coat. Really not cute. I sent it back for a refund. NO BUENO.

still love that website, though... (my purse rulz!)

-cheesy 80s/90s nostalgic- WANT:

-Speaking of nostalgia- here is some more evidence to help my cause for the comeback of Doc Martens...

-I have jumped onto the Christmas shopping train this week and I have purchased one item for 4 different people already. I love to shop- and I especially love to shop for other people- but what I do not like is waiting to shop and having to drop a large amount of money all at once...

I treated myself to some shopping the other day and had my camera with me so I decided to take notice of the window displays retailers were sporting around Vancouver. My favorites included the Holt Renfrew BCBG, and The Bay which has been coming up with some interesting concepts lately (maybe this has to do with the recent $8 billion buy-out by NRDC?).

I think a lot of retailers underestimate the power of a well set up window display. A great visual display has the power to turn a window shopper into a buying customer. It can focus just the right amount of attention on the merchandise, tell a story, and entice the shopper to step inside. The more time a shopper spends in a store, the more likely they'll buy.... and that's a FACT!

So check 'em out... Thoughts anyone?

Enjoy it!

[caption id="attachment_697" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Who What Wear"][/caption]

The Bowler hat (aka the derby or the billycock) is a felt hat with a rounded top that was invented in London around 1849. The style has endured and although it was, at one time, associated with butlers, the bowler hat is now massively popular among stylish women looking to add a little bit of edge to their outfits.

[caption id="attachment_699" align="alignleft" width="195" caption="Bowler Hat, Urban Outfitters, $38"][/caption]

Many of our favorite celebrity/model muses have been spotted wearing the Bowler everywhere from grocery shopping to red carpet events. I happen to think there is something undeniably sassy about a lady with a bowler hat tilted towards the back of her head. This hat can take an otherwise common outfit and pump up its impact by giving it a rock edge. As Who What Wear noted, the bowler hat also garnered attention on the runway shows of Sonia Rykiel and Limi Feu, showing that it is a style that can also be worn with a bit more sophistication and suggesting that it is about to become even more popular.

[caption id="attachment_698" align="alignright" width="240" caption="Source: Just Jared"][/caption]

I loved the look that Rachel Bilson had at the launch of her new line Edie Rose (more on that later). Although the tie is distractingly long, I think she pulled off this style masterfully. Using the hat and tie to pull together this boyish look, Bilson manages to channel the spirit of a proper young boy without looking like she was wearing a costume. The curvy skinny jeans and layered (pearl?) bracelets are a very nice touch.

For good tips on how to wear this style and where to find the perfect Bowler, be sure to check out Who What Wear. They have an incredible site with a lot of amazing information.

STATEMENTS asks two Wildcats to share their sense of style to clue us in

Written and Photographed by Kelsey Thomas

Ashleigh Sroufe

Ashleigh Sroufe, Wichita senior in graphic design, shows off her fashion sense in this business casual outfit. This work-appropriate ensemble is perfect for a young professional.

Sroufe's influences come from a variety of fashion magazines including Glamour, Vogue and Alternative Style. She admires high-fashion designers but doesn't claim any one in particular as being a big influence on her style. She enjoys mixing and matching pieces to create an eclectic style that she describes as "funky and edgy, but not over the top." Her style can change depending on her mood that particular day.

"I like to do solids but then throw in something kind of crazy and unexpected," says Sroufe. As an artist, she thinks fashion and clothing choices are important. "I'm a very visual person, so what you wear on the outside really expresses who you are on the inside."

John Churchill

John Churchill, Overland Park junior in music composition, promotes a laid-back sense of style and fashion. This is a casual ensemble he would wear to class or other less-formal places.

"I don't want to be a typical frat or Hollister boy. I just like to express myself in what feels good and what is comfortable to me," says Churchill. He doesn't describe himself as a "trend-setter" and wouldn't even want to be one. Instead, he explains his style by saying that it's not entirely unique and not entirely edgy, but a combination of the two.

While he's not out to impress anyone with his attire, he does see the danger in putting too much importance into fashion and clothing choices. Churchill just prefers clothing that exudes confidence and individuality. He is a strong believer that fashion should be about personal choices, not dictated by anyone else. "Today, people are so concerned about not conforming that they conform [to the non-conformists' standards]," Churchill says.
